They announce they will only have 2 low end phones, and 2 high end phones going forward.

I am guessing the z10 and q10 for the high end?

    Q5 for low end...

    z30 anywhere?

What's the other low end phone?

Z10 repositioned as a low end with Q5

Z30, Q10 high end with a new Z10 type next year as a low end and then O series replacing the Z30

Why are you assuming these will be all bb10 devices? It's massively outsold by bb7.

Moreover, what's the point of selling more versions of devices nobody wants to buy?

In the current range, high-end is Z30, Q10 and the z10 and q5 are the low end.

Notice how it's worded, it could also actually mean that there are NO new phones and they are cancelled two planned devices.

I;m new to BB. I just got a BB9900 last week and it's great.

I'd love to know what OS7 devices are outselling the new OS10 ones.

Maybe they should re-market the 9900?

There won't be any new devices. The 9720 is the last legacy. The z30 is the last bb10. Pick four phones from current portfolio

I'd be willing to guess that BBRY has come to the conclusion that they can't string BBOS/BB7 along anymore, and will force BB10 upon their clients. Realistically, that's their only viable option if they wish to move forward.

Actually I've come to the conclusion - this is misdirection - they have exited hardware but worded it to make it appeared there are new devices but in reality the portfolio is the z10, z30, q5, q10 and the hope is the company is sold before they become obsolete - what's the point of building new devices of an OS you can't sell? It's just shareholders money down the drain.

I agree. The most ridiculous part of all of that is that they just brought back BB7 from the dead (as far as new device launches go) for the 9720, and now it appears EOL is upon it. Unless the Q10 or Q5 is being cancelled. The Z30 is staying in portfolio as it was just announced. Z10 is staying as they announced the "re-tiering", which implies it is still going to be sold. Uncertainties remain the Q's. I suspect the Q10 is safe. Q5 could have a short life, although I really think the fate of the 9720 will be decided first.

Really what the announcement means in plain english is that, " we are exiting the hardware business, the Z30 was the last new device. Buy what we have or leave."

It would definitely be a "bold" move to cut BB7 right now. How long can a 6,000+ person company actually survive on just the BB10 sales?

Isn't BB7 pretty much their bread and butter still?

The Q5 will be cut IMO it just makes sense,

They need the sales of BB7 still and the Z10 has been re-tiered the Z30 and Q10 remain premium.

What happens now is anyone's guess so saying one thing or another would be wrong. For selfish reasons I'm hoping for a white knight

BB7 accounts for the most handset sales but the numbers would not indicate it as "bread and butter"

Maybe they need to drop BB10 and figure out how to improve BBOS.

I bet most of the sales of BBOS devices went to people that use low cost BIS Data plans, if they were forced to choose another phone.... it would be a cheap Android that is 1/3 the price of even the Q5. The rest of BBOS devices were probably purchased by Enterprise and Gov users that have not committed to BES10.... it might force them to go with BB10, or it might not.

If they're limiting the hardware side of business, could it be that they would now move to licensing OS 10 and put more resources there in the next phase of restructuring?

I am guessing that their four phones will be the four current BB10 devices. That's not to say that they're going to completely stop selling BB07 devices. Seems to me they would want to keep BB10 as it's their next platform. BB07 would just be phased out eventually... like the PlayBook. Legacy devices still abound and will be around for a few more years yet, but they need to move on to newer/greener pastures by somehow working the BB10 platform in.

Who would want to pay for a license to make devices with an OS that doesn't sell? When you can get one for free that does sell and is broadly recognized... namely, Android..

It's why Google was accused of predatory pricing for giving away Android for free... lol

It makes no sense why Samsung would not want to own an OS as good as BB10. They can sell phones with both Android and OS10 until they get more key apps and eventually put their focus on BB10 that they will own and that they will generate revenue from App World etc

Michael Clewley said "there will still be 4 devices a year" on his twitter feed.

That seems kind of a lot to keep putting out a year, considering the current devices aren't doing that well.

If they got their app game in shape and BBM takes off and people are enticed by BlackBerry 10, I could see more devices later next year.

I think BlackBerry should give iOS and Android users the option to use the BB10 keyboard in BBM only, to show them how much better it is. Going back to another app on their phones and having to type will be like jumping into a cold pool after being in a jacuzzi.
