    I am in my forties and have been using cell phones for YEARS. I have never 'texted' before.

    If I want to send a text message do I use SMS or MMS? What is the difference? Is there something else I should be using instead?

    I read up on Blackberry Messenger and I know that is not what I need to use as it is only for Blackbery to Blackberry messages.

    Nothing on this site explains the difference between the two. I checked the blogs/forums/Newbies/etc. It seems that Crackberry just assumes you know!

    SMS is for text only messages. MMS if for picture, audio, video messages

    sms - plain text, data service not required

    mms - muliti-media text (audio, vidio, picture texts) data IS required

    MMS = Multimedia Messaging Service, is for sending messages with multimedia attached such as a picture, video etc.

    SMS= Short Message Service and is for short text only messages usually only 160 characters long.

    Plt - my mms go with my text package. Mms is not part of my data. Bbm is the only thing that is part of my data.

    Could be a carrier difference. Just for giggles though go into Mobile network Services and turn data off and see if you can still send MMS. I cant. I think Verizon groups it with sms so it counts as a text. I have 400 text/mo but mms doesn't count against it because it is sent over data.

    I can't send SMS or MMS without my network on. It looks like they use both text and data. I have unlimited data but I only have 250 text. That is fine because I don't text a lot. My 14 yo niece is the one I message the most and she has a BB so we bbm.
