Grr, RIM! I don't see how they didn't think to implement something found on plenty of phones. Well, at least Sony Ericsson anyway.
I've had my Bold for six months and I've only noticed it now so it's not a critical feature, but it's useful for when you're trying to find out if a certain number belongs to someone in your address book.

I TOTALLY AGREE! I WAS LOOKING/HOPING THAT FEATURE WAS AVAILABLE TOO! I MISS IT FROM MY 'BASIC' PHONES! I like being able to search by #; it seems like a common sense thing to me, to have that function enabled to either search by a number OR name!
Honestly this sounds stupid but the best way to do that is to type in the phone number, then press dial, then quickly press the end key. It will then tell you if the number is in your contact list and who it is.
You can use the Search function built into the OS. Type the Area Code into the Text Field, uncheck Messages and check Contacts. Searching on 202 shows me 38 contacts. Note this matches 202 anywhere in the number. So I see 202-123-4567 as well as 220-212-3456.
You can create a group or filter for all of your contacts that are in a given area code, so then you can use just access the group or filter to find your numbers in that given area code.

Thanks for tip, Jeff. I tried to put area code in parenthesis, hoping that it would limit search to just area code, but it doesn't. But it could help gather the contacts to make a group for it.
