Having used Skype for Windows Mobile, any official client will drain the battery just as fast as iSkoot. On my Palm Treo 750, I would get no more than 6 hours battery life if I left Skype running. MSN was a little bit better at about 9 hours.

Unlike other applications, IM apps such as Skype, MSN, ICQ, etc, are constantly polling the server checking for new messages which is taxing to batteries.

WiFi phones and Skype are perfect partners

From what I can gather from the site, the definition of WiFi phones is different from a WiFi enabled phone (ie a Blackberry) and the Mobile version of Skype is only available for Windows Mobile phones or "compatible LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson phone"

Gizmo5 is probably a good alternative Gizmo5 - Make free internet calls from your mobile phone and computer - Network - Free Computer to Computer Calls where you could download Gizmo5 for your BB and or/computer and ensure the person you are calling has the same software on their end.

Will Skype work as it does on the computer? They'll let you make calls and bypass your cell minutes? That would be awesome.

Or you can use skype to go but you'd need to have money in your skype account as that feature you'd be dialing into a local number to access your skype contacts that you've setup online.
