I've got everything on correctly, but it can't load the GPS. I have OS 4.5, I have the BBM that came with it, I do not have a beta version on, I do not have 911 location on, I do not have anything that should stop this from working. Even did several resets.

I go to BBMaps, hit the GPS button, and then it gets stuck on "searching for satellites" for 10 minutes and eventually tells me it cannot locate me. And I am *not* in a rural location that wouldn't be found.

Perhaps this isn't an update for everyone? Only select users?

Do you have 4.5 OS and did you change location setting from 911 only?

yes -- I will be trying a system wipe -- perhaps it's just some bug. I will report later.

    Thanks for the suggestions though.

What version of 4.5 do u have? I have .77 (that I didn't get from vzw) but in another forum I read of people having problems with the GPS not working on .89 or .97 versions, so maybe there's something with that?

Download and install BlackStar 1.3.2 from here http://forums.crackberry.com/f41/app...9/index11.html (Post #411, I think) It is a free app that gives Lat and Long from the GPS without using maps so it is useful in your situation since it does not use any maps or your data plan.

You need to be outside and to give it a few minutes.

Does this mean I'll never be able to use the GPS like everyone else though? I might return my phone over this.

Something must be wrong. EVEN ON BLACKSTAR, it won't load. It says "No GPS Receiver is available!"

Just to be clear: I do not have 911 location on. My GPS settings:

    GPS Data Source: Device GPS
    GPS Services: Location On

Mine has been sporadic today...at best. Has only worked outside, and then slow, and not always...VZ Navigator working "like a charm". So maybe the signal is better with VZ Navigator, and/or BB Maps may not be as good a "receptor"..

Just loaded BB Maps, enabled GPS and it took a while for satelite acquisition. I will test thru the next several days. My wife is rolling her eyes at her Husband's enthusiasm for GPS on his BB. Muttered something about growing up and I replied that I was only 61 with lots to learn and do. Of course coming to the table late for diner because of testing BB GPS may not have helped my cause.

I was having trouble until I did this. The pre-set permissions had "GPS" as "Prompt" for the Blackberry Maps app. After changing this to "Allow" and doing a battery pull, mine is working!

    So excited

Whilst outside and with a clear view of the sky, go to Options, Advanced Options, GPS, press Menu and select Refresh GPS and then wait for several minutes until the display updates Lat and Long. If this does not happen, then the GPS is still locked so,.... have a look at this post How do I resend my service books? - BlackBerryFAQ and do what it says and then do a battery pull.

Verizon has only recently unlocked its GPS and your phone may still be locked.

If resending the Service Books and a battery pull do not fix it then you need to call Verizon.

ENGADGET says that you have to have OS 4.5.0.97 and it says that only BBMaps works.

    1. How do I change the permissions?

    2. Are others having "searching for satellite" remain on the screen for a while? I was actually able to get this to work but it still takes a long time to find the satellite and it seems to not work unless I am outside of my apartment for a while.

Thanks for the help from everyone. I am using .77 on 4.5 so I doubt the .97 requirement is actually true...

GPS is satellite based and therefore you, well, your phone needs to see, the sky where the satellites live.

This isn not at all like the CDMA cell phone towers whose signals got through most buldings. The satellite signal is weak and its frequencies are absorbed by buildings so you will get no reception inside.

The more satellites you can see the better. tThe same page i stole the picture from GPS Explained has a pretty good explanation of how it all works.

BUT, you MUST be able to see the sky with your phone. Without GPS, the phone will triangulate off the cell towers gvong about a 1 mile location fix. With 3 or more satellites you can get down to 10 feet which should find the bar door after a little eyballing.
