Research In Motion Ltd.ís inventory levels may be one crucial metric that could determine how well the company is positioned to handle the release of its next-generation BlackBerry devices.

In the quarter ending December 1, RIM shipped approximately 6.9 million BlackBerry devices and 255,000 PlayBook units.

RIM now has about $457 million in inventory in the third quarter of 2012. Thatís down from $1.027 billion in the quarter that ended on March 3 and places the company in a better position to get rid of the rest of its BlackBerry 7 devices before the launch of the new BlackBerry 10 models.

RIM is planning to continue manufacturing BB7 devices well after BB10 launch. Inventory not really a good metric to go by.

RIM has, currently, almost a half billion dollars worth of BB7's. At current sell through that is about a 6 month supply. Thorsten did say support for BB7 was good for another 12 to 18 months. Once BB10 comes on stream that 6 months of phones could stretch a few months longer. It wouldn't take much to manufacture to fill the channel as demand warranted, I would suspect.

In developing parts of the world, the high end BB7 phones (Bold and Torch) will start to increase sales (hopefully), as those markets wireless infrastructures start to improve (in terms of 2G to 3G to 4G). The BB7 phones will likely sell quite well since the price will have gone down for the phones.
