Anyone else think RIM should just scrap the 9600 series on Verizon and Sprint and just have the 9700 series as the "premium" device on all networks? it just seems kind of pointless for there to be two "premium" lines out there.

Same thing with the Curve line. I just feel as though the Curve 8900 is kind of pointless when there is the 8500 series below it and the 9700 above it. Aside from screen resolution there isnt much difference between the 8500 and 8900 series'

    Thoughts?

well, as for the two "premium lines", they have to have 2 phones for the two types of networks(GSM and CDMA).

at first, the bold wasnt on TMO, so the 8900 was the best blackberry they had. also, the 8900 is way better looking and more solid than the 8520.

You're kidding, right? The 8900 is the best BlackBerry I've owned to date (and yes, that includes my prior experience with the Bold). It's solidly-built and I rarely have problems with it that aren't user-caused.

Agree with silentsong. 8900 is an awesome device. Screen, keyboard, plenty of memory, etc. Such a workhorse.

OP: The 8900 is a much better device than the 85xx in terms of function and looks. Go to BlackBerry.com and compare the 8900 to the 8520 side by side and you'll see that the 8900 pwns it.

If there was a line of product that should be gotten rid of, it should be the 85xx series. I know its brand new but I can't wrap my head around people who can afford a $30 or more data plan but can't come up with the price of admission. Its a shame the 8950 never happened in the US but the 85xx series did.

If anything the 8900 should be the only BB left in the 8s.. The 8520 is pointless..

None of us here are in any position to help RIM make business decisions. RIM should make whatever they want and it's up to us whether we buy their products or not. Plain and simple.

85xx: low end since the pearls are on their way out (except the pearl flip). 89xx: great mid range device; workhorse solid build (just like the 83xx series that's on its way out. 9xxx: the device for people that want a little flash with their work! RIM to me is right on target with really streamlining their devices and getting everything closer together as far as design and build.

I guess my point is, why not make the same device for both carriers. They came out with the 8520 and now they are coming out with the 8550. its the same device one is GSM the other CDMA.

They could have done the same with the 9700/9600 series'

Also i was always under the impression that the Curve was meant to be the entry level device. I dont see the need to have an entry level device in the 85xx series and then a few steps up in the 89xx series. if you want something better than the 85xx then why not a 97xx/96xx phone?

They should definitely trim their offering for the sake of improving quality.

    RIM's marketing dept seems lost.
