I'm mid contract and in need of a new phone. My service provider (bell) Is offering the more recent blackberry bold 9900 ( i think this is the same as the 9930 for Americans) or the torch 9800 for the exact same price.

I love the bigger touch screen and slide out keyboard of the torch. Oddly enough, i also kind of like the lower resolution (i'm visually impaired, so bigger font = easier to see)That being said, i assume it would be a mistake at this point to get a phone that's already about a year and a half old. Is the new operating system and the increased hardware worth the smaller screen size and bigger phone size?

What about the browser. I'm not much of a mobile browser, but i heard pinch to zoom didn't work well on the 9800. Is this true? Lastly, i have a tendency to drop my phones, do you think one is more durable than the other?

What would you guys pick? Any help or info would be great!

Having had both myself, I say the 9900. Nothing wrong with the Torch but the Bold is the best phone hands down. Also having dropped both, the Bold came out better in that for me as well. I thought I would miss the bigger screen but I didn't and the keyboard is so great that you will want to type just to feel it.

If it's only between those two, then definitely get the 9900. But if the Torch 2 (9810) was an option, then you should consider that for the bigger screen.

I figured as much, but i really wanted the bigger screen / slide out keyboard, so i wanted to find out if there was a noticeable difference in terms of performance between the two models.

I'm getting a refreshed / demo phone, so sadly, i can't get the torch 2.
    Thanks for the quick replies!

between the 9900 and the 9800 the 9900 wins hands down. Ive never used OS 6 my self but my father did on his Style and now he has the new 9350 and OMG what a difference my brother has a 9900 and i have played around with it a bit and i find it very fluid and knows exactly what i want.

also if you arnt in any real need for a phone why dont you wait for the BB10s??

if your time has come for an upgrade hold on to it until you are 100% about the phone you want. Bell cant take that upgrade aw ay form you if you dont use it by the time your contract ends, you just get switched over to a 30 day(month to month) one and can cancel at any time with out hte early cancellation fee. Bell ill push you to use your upgrade so that they can count on your money for the next X amount of years.

Take the Bold 9900. It is twice as fast and it has OS7 on it.
The Torch 9800 is an O.K. device but you can really tell the difference. I had a Torch 9800 and now love my Bold 9930.

    100% 9900

Pinch-to-zoom on the 9800 is laggy...9810 much better

OP, you can easily change the default font size for easier viewing

Hm, do they not offer the Torch 9810? That's the OS7 Torch.
If they have that, I would go with that. That's what I plan on getting when I switch to T-Mobile.

Good luck with whatever decision you make, though!

bell offers a few demo / refreshed phones for almost half price when you're mid contract. Both the 9900 and the 9800 were the same price. I theoretically could have gotten the 9810, but i would have had to pay quite a bit more for it. I basically need a phone that will be good to me for the next year and a half. As it is, paying 275$ out of pocket mid contract isn't fun.

As for the font size, thats one of the things i like about blackberries. I'm actually legally blind - this means i need to have a decent font size and i have to have it really close to be able to see anything. I love that changing the font to 14 bold makes everything changes(exept for the browser, where i hope to use pinch to zoom). While apple has unbeatable built in accessibility, having a large font accross quite a few apps is very helpful!

Well you need a 3 pack of screen protectors. A good case should be thin and not skin. I have a hard rubber one that my phone fits into like a shoe. You could also get a snap front and snap back plastic or hard rubber.

i like the idea of a snap front / bak one. i also like the idea of one that has edges on the front, so if my phone falls / if i lay ot screen down, nothing will happen. There are a lot of options out there! Just need to do some research!
