setting up email issues on new BB

apologies in advance for probably asking questions that have already been answered somewhere out there, however after many hours searching i can't find them!
i recently purchased a blackberry bold 9700 through the provider '3' here in australia.
i followed the options to set up a hotmail account. worked perfectly.
i repeated the process on another hotmail account. worked perfectly.
now i am trying to set up my university email account and am running into some problems.
firstly: i believe i actually have two university emails, one is
[email protected]bla
and the other is
[email protected].
they seem to be the same? when i log into my email thru uni all i enter is my userID and it automatically takes me to my email. i believe it is somehow set up through gmail because it's directed to a gmail page despite me not having the @gmail.com extension. i have sent test emails to both <my.name@> and <myIDnumber@> and they both show up in my uni inbox.
now when i tried to set up the email on my blackberry i first tried <myIDnumber@> (because this is the address i see in the top right screen of the gmail inbox page) and it worked! it said congratulations and it would start receiving emails in 20 minutes or so. brilliant! well, that was about a week or two ago and to this day my blackberry has not received one email. right now i have unread messages in my uni inbox that i received yesterday. the blackberry hasn't picked up a thing. why is it not receiving any emails?
now after a day or two i thought, hey maybe it's because people are sending emails to my other address. even though they are both linked to the same inbox, perhaps i need to have the <my.name@> address aswell in order to receive all my emails.
so i tried to set up <my.name@> and repeatedly got the following error:
invalid email address of password if error persists contact @studentblabla or something like that.
i've googled it and come across people suggesting trying to set it up on a PC rather than the blackberry itself by accessing

and creating an account. BUT, when i try to create an account it says
"Your account is not accessible via HTML browser. Please use your device to access BlackBerry Internet Service."
so then i tried to figure out what that was about and found some stuff in this thread:

that says
"Creating the new BlackBerry Internet Service account using one of the above applications allows subscribers to manage their new accounts without having to create a login user name and password."
so if this is the case and i've already registered an account, what exactly is my username and password???
thanks heaps, email access if obviously one of the things that drew me to the blackberry in the first place and not having access to my uni email is really annoying me!
other people have suggested contacting uni but even if i contact the IT department what am i asking them for?? what exactly will they be able to give me other than my email and password?? and if they, as i predict they might, prove to be no help at all, then what?
