As everyone knows by now, the screen resolution on the Dev Alpha device is 1280 x 768. Let’s just go on record and confirm that this will be the screen resolution shipped with the first BlackBerry 10 full touch device.

Thorsten Heins has also gone on record letting everyone know that full touch isn’t going to be the only BlackBerry device that we produce. We are also continuing with our iconic keyboard for users like me who love typing on a physical keyboard. This new physical keyboard device will have a screen resolution of 720 x 720.

Now you may be thinking, great, you’re letting me know what the screen resolution is ahead of time, but what are you doing about making my life easier going forward?

We’ve listened, we’ve learned, and we are now telling you that moving forward new smartphones will be standardizing on the following screen resolutions which will allow you to design your applications to fit two main form factors:

    Full touch devices: 1280 x 720 (16:9)
    Keyboard devices: 720 x720 (1:1)
Standardizing on Screen Resolutions for BlackBerry 10 devices BlackBerry Developer Blog

    The other interesting nugget is:

This first BlackBerry 10 device has been in the works for quite some time now with lots of supply chain management and manufacturing tooling to bring it to launch. So it’s pretty much a sealed deal.
I think we are going full-circle here - remember how people claim that the dev alpha was simply the mysterious colt device with the radio taken out and now we know that the devices that journalists have been show looks virtually the same as the dev alpha?

I'm *guessing* the spec of the released phone is the same as the dev alpha.

Sure, close enough that it may not matter.

The thing that might work with this is the qwerty's 720x720 is what you might get when you take the full touch's 1280x720 and subtract the soft keyboard. If this is the case, it should make it easier for developers and keep things a little more cohesive than they were in the past.

I made a little diagram to help myself picture it.

So I guess it's even bigger than the iPhone already but what about the S3? Also one more thing, will the design gonna be changed as well or is it just gonna look the exact same thing from the Dev's Alpha?

That particular design, to me, looks cheap and flimsy. The angled edges on the ends is too much like a hand held game console for my liking...

I don't like the one with the silver top and bottom but the second, all black one, I can see owning. Not really into silver, in TVs or phones.

What about the bevel? is that wide enough for the swipe gestures?

it would suck if they dont add some aesthetics to the design of it. the rectangular slab is not very interesting. c'mon rim, step outside your comfort zone a little!

OKay so is this a dev-only good thing or it means something for us?

I like the whole 720p thing because it's really good enough even for 40" tv..

Nice diagram. The only place I can see the square res being a problem for devs is with landscape orientation apps.

The UI fad right now is to offer additional context or functionality when flipping to landscape mode. This is going to be a problem with the square screen since landscape will be the exact same dimensions as portrait.

    agreed

I am looking forward to 720x720 for the webpage viewing,

but I do hope they make the zooming smarter

I hate the device wanting to zoom before I can click a text box, happens on every device I own drives me batty

What impact does this confirmation of resolutions have on development on the PlayBook? To my knowledge, the PlayBook is neither of these resolutions (1024x600 I believe), so does that mean then that there are actually 3 different resolutions for BB10, or that there will be a next gen PlayBook with higher resolution?

I would have to assume that the next playbook will be either 1280x720 or 2560x1440.
Although realistically for development purposes, you should be treating a tablet as a totally different environment anyway, regardless of resolution.

Agreed with your previous point. Hopefully it won't be too difficult for devs to work around that. I also agree that the next playbook will be one of the two resolutions you mentioned, similar to the Nexus 7 going with 1280x720.

They might have to support the PlayBook's resolution for awhile since it's supposed to get BB10. I'm glad they'll support it, but it doesn't help in terms of fragmentation. On the other hand, the aspect ratio isn't too different.

So 1024x600, 1280x720, and 720x720 for now. Then I take it they will go the apple way in the future and support 2560x1440, 1440x1440 to make it easy. This is while slowly dropping the 1024x600 support of the old PlayBooks.

That's just my take on it.

Me too Kevin, I'm so eager to get this in my hands and show it off to everyone! Because I can't wait to be asked what kind of phone is that, as I watch their eyes when I say "Oh, you haven't seen the new BlackBerry? Well let me show you...."
