Is there a way to save contacts to gmail automatically without having to check off the sim, local and bblink checkboxes every time?

only if you go and put in a "placeholder" gmail that you will never use, never email, never cc, nothing. just a placeholder where you keep your contacts.

Technically GMAIL will sync your contacts automatically, on a periodical basis.

If you use a Gmail account that will not connect (by design), what I mean is to simply have / create this one account where you store vetted accounts (which means you actually look after the lists, etc) and not use it for any format of communication, it will upload all your contacts from phone to the Gmail. However it is not immune to additions by other apps such as Facebook (a very notorious app that tends to just download all contacts into your phone's contacts app) therefore from time to time, unless you disconnect that account after sync, you will have a lot of unwanted contacts in that placeholder Gmail.
