When not actively using the phone put it in sleep mode (in it's case) or press the MUTE button on top of the phone to put it in standby mode.
Turning off Wifi (if you phone has it)
Turning off Bluetooth when not using it.
Not allowing programs to run in the background when not actually using the phone (closing them out/off) when you have finished with them.
Turning it off when not using it will save the battery the most.
Press alt-back to see which programs are running. There are 5 that always run, browser, home screen, bbm, phone, and mail - my faves is also there if you have TMo, the rest should be closed when not in use -- press menu-close.
