I was wondering... would getting a prepaid SIM (if one is even available) be cheaper than using AT&T's SIM card + roaming while in Japan? I think I only use about 14MB of data per-week, but I may use more when I'm away and not on the computer as much.

Also, would my email still work even though I'm connecting via a different provider/APN?

I don't think GSM is used in Japan. I think they are mostly CDMA.

Kind of. They use WCDMA 2100 IIRC.

Yeah .. the 9700 has the 2100mhz frequency, so the phone will work.
I called AT&T today and basically got everything hooked up... I think it will be cheaper than renting a phone in the long-run. And more convenient.

You can use whatever carrier you want, the APN is the same. For example, I'm currently using an unlocked AT&T BB Curve 8310 with a foreign SIM card in a foreign country, and I'm still managing accounts through att.blackberry.com

Now, careful with prepaid SIM's, in general, they do not offer prepaid blackberry service, just plain ol' data, so you may end up without the BB whistles. (they somehow ban the bb's APN)

So as long as I'm paying for AT&T service, I can use whatever carrier basically as long as BlackBerry isn't blocked by them?
