I switched to a Blackberry from a regular phone because I couldn't use my own Ringtones. When I was with Fido, they said because of copywrite laws I could only use the tones that were included on the phone or pay to download tones from the carrier's site.
That was BS as far as I was concerned. Its not illegal to use your own music/ringtones, and if someone tells you otherwise, they're fill of it.

copying cds, making ringtones etc is usually only illegal if you try to sell them without portions going to the artists, producers, labels etc.
you can do whatever you want pretty much as long as you arent trying to turn a profit on it.

As stated above you should be fine if you"re not trying to sell them or make money from them then youll be fine.
