RIM sells NewBay to Synchronoss Technologies | FP Tech Desk | Financial Post
--“As we execute our transition and seek to save over $1-billion in operating costs, we have taken the decision to divest NewBay as it was not deemed core for the BlackBerry product roadmap in the future,” RIM said in a statement.--
Im incline to agree with the majority, seems they got what the could from the company and sold the rest. It also didnt hurt that they sold the company damn near the price they used to settle with Nokia so in the end the deal was an even wash.

Newbay as a standalone entity was losing money which probably was a factor in getting rid of it especially since an equivalent service can be obtained from a handful of different providers.
