RIM PlayBook trumps new iPad in UK channel sales - analyst
'As good as Apple's tab but half the price' Oh, BURN
RIM's once little-loved BlackBerry PlayBook tablet has outsold the latest iPad in Blighty's IT distribution channel, according to an analyst.

More than 802,000 touchscreen tablets were sold in November and December compared to nearly 118,000 units in the same period of 2011 - and Apple accounted for just a quarter of this latest figure, IT distribution watcher Context estimates.

Just goes to show how important dealer markups and price points are. As long as RIMM can get the dealers onside, BB10 will be successful.

its conflicting information. They first state apple accounted for a quarter of the sales (200k) and then state later the 113k for ipad 4. Still good to see

Nestled behind the PlayBook was, according to Context, Apple's fourth-generation iPad which sold 113,000 units, followed by the Nexus 7 (105,000), the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 inch (85,000), and the seven-inch Galaxy Tab (60,000), as well plenty of other Android kit. Meanwhile, distributors sold a total of 203,000 Apple slabs including the fourth iteration of the iPad.

Chaudhry said distributors were handed just 19,000 iPad Minis as Apple hogged the supply, prioritising stock for its stores and for then for Premium Resellers
thats the end of the article

so 113000 ipad4`s and 19000 ipad minis mean if they sold apx 200000 then 68000 ipad2/3 devices

This is good for RIM....a huge improvement from what they were selling before the massive discounts, but the numbers are still very poor. I can't see the analyst report in detail, to see his methodology, but if in fact RIM really did sell ~160000, the numbers aren't good. Probably represents less than 3% of marketshare I'd guess.

Playbook LTE version can do the same as any ipad model including Dual Band and more then any ipad model including the ipad 4.

apple likes to boast they are the ones first for this or that, but in fact BB was first with playbook in many things.

PB all the way, i am not saying apple ipad sucks, but they are the ones behind now since june 2012.

Playbook at half the price or even lower then that as i got my new one in dec 2012 for 99.97 plus tax in canada can do everything an ipad can do and more and better.

I think it means 113,000 units of the 203,000 Apple Ipads were the Ipad 4. This leaves about 90,000 other Ipads that sold at the same time.

I hope there is a quiet revolution when BB10 makes it's over to PlayBook. Even if BB10 isn't optimized for the 1GB RAM, as long as it's useable and fresh, this is going to be awesome with people getting great value from BlackBerry.

I believe it represents sales through traditional third-party retail channels. So it wouldn't include direct sales through the Apple, Amazon, Blackberry stores etc...

I think it is better than that. Tablet sales were expected to be 5-7 million in 2012 in the UK I think. November to December would represent a disproportionate amount of that, so figure maybe 1.5-2 million in those months through all the various channels including direct. 160,000 would probably be around 10% marketshare.

Although this is good news, it doesn't even scratch the surface on how many iPads sold in the last quarter alone.
But I think its a good start.

I doubt it....but again, without seeing this guy's analysis hard to say how valid it is. The numbers seem odd to me, especially given the jump in tablet sales at the end of the year. Dixon's reported something like a millon tablets sold through them alone! (though that would include some other neighboring regions). Given Apple's recent disclosure of 22+ million ipads sold in the last quarter, and given the UK's traditional proportion of Apple's sales, I would expect it to closer to my rough estimate if 160,000 is correct.

In any case, I'd be shocked it the UK only sold 1.5 mil tablets in that period.

Whatever, the more playbooks out there means, to me, that many more BB10 devices with paying customers in the near future. Hopefully developers will start to see that there always was a large BB10 customer base even before the phones were released. And I'm sure they are hungry for big name apps. I sure am.
