Just curious why that is. MS has been quite open and long-term in describing when we can expect to see WP8 on shelves. Everyone always knows way ahead of time when new Android versions are coming. We've known about BB10 for a very very long time, and we'll likely know the features/specs about half a year before release.
But I find it curious that we're being told virtually nothing about an iPhone 5, coming close to a mere couple of months before their traditional release period.

Apple never says much before the release of a new product. it keeps the people guessing and they're in a position where they can do that. Usually about a month before a prototype gets "lost" in a bar somewhere and then the rumors start building up a frenzie before the release. Its good marketing if your company is in a position to do so.

Builds anticipation without making promises they are then judged by.

    Anticipation = buzz = sales

MS wants you to pass on competitors products (many of which are already available) and instead buy their own which either are not selling (WP7) or are not yet available (W8). The only way this works is if they tell you what's coming. Ditto for BB10. On the other hand, with Android it has more to do with giving OEMs and developers a heads up on the coming software, with the hope being that those vendors will use it. It hasn't necessarily worked out that way for Android, but you can't say Google isn't trying.

Apple does reveal iOS updates a few months in advance, but not hardware, in part because of the Osborne effect. If you recall, the only iPhone that was pre-announced was the first, probably so that Apple could reveal its existence instead of the FCC or some jacka$$ at Cingular/AT&T.

I was recently looking back at some iPhone 5 stories on a UK consumer website. It was confidently predicted in January that the all new iPhone 5 would be launched in June. That was in 2011, not 2012. Up to the day before the launch of the 4S in Oct, almost all of the media were expecting Apple to reveal iPhone 5 alongside a "cheaper" 4S.

These are some of the headlines from 2011, before the launch of iPhone 4S.
"iPhone 5 stolen by factory worker?"
"Official: iPhone 5 to be unveiled on October 4th (2011)"
"iPhone 5 release two weeks away, claims anonymous Apple rep"
"iPhone 5 cases confirm slimmer, larger design"
"Cheaper iPhone 4S confirmed by AT&T listing?"
"iPhone 5 'shipping this month'" - Sept 2011
"'Lost' iPhone 5 prototype a publicity stunt?" - We all know the answer to that one.
"Apple store fit-out fuels iPhone 5 4G rumours"
"iPhone 5 to launch in October not September, says Apple insider"
"Cheap iPhone 4S won't show at iPhone 5 launch, say suppliers " - Should have said that iPhone 4S won't be cheap when it shows.
"iPhone 5 to get radical case redesign, claims inside source"
"Will the iPhone 5 really be worth the wait?" - dated Apr 2011
"iPhone 5 announcement coming on June 6th(2011)?"
"iPhone 5 to get 4-inch panel, A5 dual core processor and a keyboard?"
iPhone 5 to feature 'completely new design' - this is dated Jan 2011
"iPhone 5 to get FM, AM and satellite radio, plus radial menus"

These all came from an independent consumer website in the UK and all predate the launch of iPhone 4S. Some of the other headlines were more accurate, but this is iHype on steroids and iPnone 5 would have received 2 years of hype by the time it hits the shops.

Good point. I mean, if you look at this 2006 prototype, it's clear Apple copied Android:

Someone at Apple must have simply forgotten the physical QWERTY keyboard, or maybe a memo was missed. They also forgot to make the iOS UI look like Windows Mobile.

You mean like Playbook gestures from webos and the tiles they showed yesterday which resemble metro?

    No harm no foul.

Who really cares what Apple does?
Based on the number of Apple threads and comments on this forum and the number of news items on the net, the whole tech world.
