have tried n tested the trackpad on the Curve 8250. not too bad. i anticipate that it'd be less hassle to maintain, as opposed to the conventional trackballs.
but personally, the soft white glow (trackball) on my Bold 9000 is 2nd to none. issues about it choking/less responsive is only due to dust/dirt... takes due diligence to keep it clean & glowing white. but i enjoy taking time to clean my phone.
simple camera maintenance/cleaning kit does the trick.
