I like him. Minus the whole flare up with YouMail (IIRC), I have appreciated his demeanor.

I would have preferred Research In Motion's BlackBerry Developer Relations Team to have written the definitive book on high-quality applications for mobile platforms (smartphone and tablet). However, we shall see what is hiding behind the curtain come 30 January 2013. We might be surprised and find 65% decent applications and only 35% crap-apps.

That is unlikely. Just look at tv. 90 percent of it is complete garbage. Then you have hbo and amc

Nice to see that you stayed clear of this inconvenient point unlike previous postings where you were dutifully corrected.
Hmmm, would you be so kind to point to that thread, because I truly don't remember to be "dutifully corrected" for RIM of having 94% of top iOS/Android apps. I believe I've never argued about that fact as soon I've read about it on twitter from some RIM employee. Thanks

@chrysaurora Thanks a lot for bringing this to attention of someone who can actually help those devs.

For those who thinks that those complained developers were about to scam RIM. IF you even read that thread the only complain they had was no clear explanation why app has failed the testing. What kind of entertaining value do you expect from app that keeps your passwords and credit card details safe. How about communication in this case? Are you expecting that app to have a share button to post all your saved password on Facebook or BBM? That would definitely add some entertaining value to the app, but I'm afraid that entertainment would be solely for you Facebook/BBM contacts when they start read your e-mails and purchase things online using your credit cards.

"@jtegen "With the criteria the way it is, none of the core apps would pass BFBB. Maybe if the calendar app farted when you added an event, that would make it entertaining and receive the certification." this one was the best description of their frustration I believe, but also extremely funny

there is another one: "BlackBerry People Get Things Done... as long as its entertaining" - jtegen

So if you follow all those requirements we may end up to have B4BB section full of fart apps with integrated mapping and BBM communication

1/ I think most of those posters are looking for a quick buck... There seems to only be about 15 unique "commiserator" IDs amongst all the posters.

2/ Here's how to scam RIM.
Throw together an app that qualifies for the 10k guarantee.
Put enough fake purchases through to get $1000, score $9000 profit.
RIM would be foolish to allow that.

3/Good on RIM for having standards, but maybe they need to me more candid if an app is rejected because "dood, it just sucks. C'mon, man. Make it look good, test it properly ( Which can be hard and tedious work) and try again."
1/ yes, may be. Also some difficulties to know exactly why their apps were rejected.
2/ won't be the case, approval for 10K is really a challenge
3/ May RIM hear you. I personally delayed my app submission three times (hack-a-thons) because I thought it doesn't meet what I believe is the minimum quality level.

In a way, they did. Pretty well, actually. In particular for the UI, witch is, IMHO one of the most current reason for reject.

If you add the sum of documentation (best practices, fundamentals), it's even better.

@cjcampbell did his app(s) passed B4BB certification? I totally agree with his arguments and I do believe that B4BB section must contain best or at least above average apps. But at the same time I also hope RIM team can make everything to have more of those apps by providing developers a proper reply with more concrete explanation why the app has failed the test. Because if we will have 95% of crap and android ports (if with crap apps it's clear they are failure, Android apps at least have chance to be converted with certain demand to native versions) in store no one will ever buy BB 10 device that in turn will not attract big names to platform, so we all loose.

Nope, it is BB10 only for now. And, as stated before, I delayed the publication. Should happen during this weekend hack-a-thon.

Well, RIM has thought about it and has made it very hard for developers to scam them. Of course, it is still possible. RIM wants you to make not only $1000 (before they give you $9000 as part of $10k commitment) but they also want at least 500 separate purchases. So, if a developer wanted to spend their own $1000, developer would have to arrange it by having 500 different BlackBerry users purchase his/her app. Difficult to do (although, not impossible).
What RIM has done is made the requirements such that if they are actually met you have an EXCELLENT quality app that will sell... and what RIM isn't doing is giving the "as though explained to a five year old" explanation of the rejection to each and every developer for each and every app when the developers haven't really done proper testing and so on.

I'm not one of those who complain about shovelware (it's a nasty fact of life in the mobile OS wars) but I do complain about whiny scammers who, for example, get refused a Price Match at an electronics retailer with an ad that is CLEARLY a pricing error that even the advertiser isn't honouring.

Yes... GOOD FAITH EFFORTS deserve a detailed response. BAD FAITH efforts do not. Like porn, as far as lousy software attempting to pass itself off as something worthy of a revenue guarantee is concerned, "I know it when I see it." and I'm sure the poor souls evaluating the shovelware coming in feel the same way. A facial expression that says "Seriously?" should be the only response they get.

But likewise, GOOD quality apps that aren't getting through on a technicality i.e. "your app doesn't allow contacts to be exchanged by NFC" when it's a tower defense game with excellent graphics and gameplay, well, that's kind of crappy. I think RIM should do a mea culpa here and introduce a seconf "tier" of revenue guarantee (without lowering the quality bar) but allow for apps with less of a reliance on the BB10 OS "infrastructure", maybe with a $3000 revenue guarantee.

Not that you'd know it, but Apple was rejecting apps solely for subjective reasons, not even letting them in the STORE. Since developing 6 apps in a week is UNLIKELY to produce any REAL QUALITY apps (unless porting over high quality apps from other platforms that took weeks to develop in their original form) but adding the BB10-specific functionality isn't going to take only a matter of hours or days, especially if it's actually tested properly.

There was a dev from another thread (Saiga?) who had mentioned how easy it was during the Port-a-thon to make the $100 per app qualification. All's he needed to do was create some web-link apps that took him less than an hour per app to create. All of these were being accepted as apps, which is a joke. If the App World is going to be flooded with app links, then it could spell trouble. I'm hoping that during that 15,000 app Port-a-thon, that after all the submissions, someone is going thru with some QC and getting rid of things that aren't needed.

This may have append ... but it's not possible now (and I believe for at least the 2 last port-a-thon). These type of "single function" or "web link" apps have been excluded within the terms and conditions.
    https://developer.blackberry.com/off...ortathonterms/
Apps must not: (a) have passed testing and already been approved by BlackBerry App World for sale on BlackBerry 10 ; (b) contain a web launcher or shortcut; (c) contain a web browser; or, (d) be an app that provides a simple single function such as playing a noise or displaying a graphic ("Excluded App"). To be eligible, the App must (a) comply with these Official Terms and Conditions; (b) comply with the BlackBerry App World Vendor Guidelines ("Guidelines"); (c) have been approved through BBAW; and, (d) be approved by Sponsor as outlined in Section 4 below. You may participate by submitting as many unique Apps as you wish but duplicates are not permitted. Sponsor reserves the right to refuse to accept Apps that are substantially similar by any participant.

at the end it seems someone who said that some developers didn't even read requirements has a correct assumption But also it's obvious now they realize that those who wants to achieve the BFB certification need more clear explanations of why testing failed. Very good news and everyone is happy Thanks to chrysaurora for bringing this to attention of Alec Saunders and thanks to Alec Saunders for issuing clear explanation what they expect From provided example, now I can sleep with assurance that BFB section will have good apps.
