RIM down to #5 cell phone maker
- sleepngbearRetired ModeratorApple becomes top-five cell-phone maker for the first time - Computerworld
Apple has pushed into the top 5 cell phone makers in the world in the 3rd quarter. It jumped to #4, pushing RIM down to #5 and dumping Sony Ericsson out of top 5 altogether. (It's in the article, but FWIW, Nokia is solidly #1, followed by Samsung and LG.) Quite an accomplishment considering Apple only offers two versions of basically the same phone.
It will be very interesting to see:
- how RIM fares once it reports a full quarter of Torch sales, since the Torch launched half way through the quarter
- if the introduction of the iPhone on Verizon will boost Apple significantly higher, cannibalize its AT&T sales, or something in between
- in Windows Phone 7 may in some way help LG (or not) maintain what looks like a pretty solid hold on 3rd
iPhone sales would have to more than double for Apple to move up any, while RIM would only need to jump by a few million to retake 4th (ha -- only a few million). On the other hand, Sony Ericsson, who seems to be banking heavily on Android, only needs to jump a few million to overtake RIM. Gonna be an interesting horse race between 4th, 5th and 6th in the next 6-12 months.10-30-10 11:24 PMLike 0 -
