RIM has argued that it lost out in developed countries as carriers balked at offering non-LTE devices. With BB10 fixing that problem 2013 could be an oustanding year for RIM.

While 4G LTE may still be in its infancy, with 3G still a bigger player with a lot of mobile providers and mobile devices, the latest projections from Strategy Analytics shows 4G LTE device sales tripling from this year to exceed a quarter-billion in 2013. The age of 4G is coming.

The shift to 4G — specifically LTE, and not WiMax — is significant for smartphone makers, who will have to use specific hardware to connect to the networks. Samsung (SSNLF) and Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) are prepared for the growth of 4G, and other manufacturers like Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and RIM (NASDAQ:RIMM) haven’t failed to predict the move to 4G. There is also speculation that Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Firefox might try to get a bite of the pie during the transition by making their own smartphone devices — though it is truly just speculation in Amazon’s case.

Yeah amazon and firefox are considering to make a device. RIM has one ready, in the final step before launch and yet its "too late" for RIM according to some. Lol

LTE is a marketing ploy really...the Nexus 4 is a HSPA+ device and it's selling quite well. The price doesn't hurt it's sales, but most people won't choose a phone over another without LTE.

Carriers want LTE phones because plans cost more.

The Nexus 4 is selling well for the price. Having LTE isn't that big of a deal. Since it's mainly meant for T-Mobile who don't even have LTE yet.

If it had LTE, more people would have bought it. I'm sure of it.

More than "LTE ready", RIM's leverage lies in Paratek's RF tech; the pentaband stuff that they were developing on. If RIM needs cash, they'll just license it out PER device. (That's a **** lot) or keep it exclusive for a 1-generation headstart before offering to other vendors.
