According to industry sources, Research In Motion is said to be in acquisition talks with Gist, a*Seattle-based startup. The deal is said to be almost completed, but either party could still walk away at anytime.

Gist creates profiles of people from your business network by collecting publicly available information from sources like Rapleaf. The profile data is available every time someone sends an e-mail.

The possible idea behind acquiring Gist would be to revamp the current address book in BlackBerry devices by making them more social and networked. Think of it as a social inbox, much like the new inbox on Facebook.

RIM has been strategically acquiring new companies left and right. It will be interesting to see if this deal becomes finalized and how RIM can incorporate Gist with their recently acquired TAT. Would you like your BlackBerry to have a social inbox?
