The average person buys a brand they recognise and trust, not an unknown name, unless they are on a strict budget at the low end of the market. Even the average person who works inside the tech industry is not aware of QNX, it may as well be a Chinese copycat tech manufacture for all they know. The number people who would see the QNX name on a phone, recognise the brand and attribute qualities to it is infinitesimally small.

QNX is only known to a tiny number of geeks who either know it's embedded OS credentials or its purchase by BlackBerry. I happen to have known of QNX for 15 years, but I'm a Software Engineering graduate and have worked in the IT industry for the 16 years so I am not the average consumer or even the average guy who works in IT.

With the right marketing BlackBerry could re-brand themselves with a new name and succeed if they manage to reinvent themselves to be "cool" enough, but marketing is one of the things BlackBerry historically is atrocious at. BlackBerry don't even have the money to market the products they have now effectively to consumers so how on Earth could they afford to bring a whole new name to market and get it known? Even if they could afford it QNX is not that new name anyway. It's not a 'cool' looking or sounding name or a known brand with any value in the minds of enough people.

It would be better for BlackBerry to buy a known brand name from the past if it were to rebrand. How about the Atari Z50 or Sega, or Commodore or Amiga? All tech brands from the past but the point is they are still more well known today, without any effort, than QNX.

Personally, I just don't think BlackBerry can ever rebuild it's brand amongst consumers. BlackBerry has become a joke/laughingstock amongst the majority of North American consumers to the point where a huge contingent of people would literally be embarrassed to be seen with one.

I love BlackBerry, but this is the reality of how bad things have gotten.

The moment they start using QNX as their name, QNX is a tarnished brand.

You have to solve the problem you have, renaming isn't going to solve the problem for you.

Interesting point. My original idea was to use a totally new phone name like "SkyPhone" (or anything else that sounds cool), and simply say it comes with "trusted BlackBerry Security".

Then I'd say call it the

"QNX Z50 with BlackBerry Guardian Security",

So brand it as a QNX phone (not a BlackBerry phone), but advertise it as having the patented 'BlackBerry security'.

But BlackBerry isn't running QNX as the main OS. BB10 is the OS. QNX is just embedded.

I think they should stick with BlackBerry. My girlfriend was due an upgrade earlier this year. (Her phone, I wasn't bored of her). I asked her if she wanted a RIM. The finger marks lasted days on my face.

    Done this on my Z10
    Lol

QNX is the kernel of BB10 same way Linux is the kernel of Android.

No, I'm afraid you're incorrect about that. It is well known that QNX is the underlying OS of BB10. The OS kernel of BB10 is the QNX microkernel.

BB10 is QNX with an added Android runtime, Cascades GUI framework, active frames, etc... BB10 is built on top of QNX.

I'm not sure what you mean by "QNX is just embedded".

However, I agree that BB10 is not JUST straight QNX (if that's what you were getting at).

RIM sounds way better. BlackBerry is just the devices, QNX shouldnt be jumbled in with "BlackBerry". That word is the most tarnished name in electronics, why emphasize it even more.

Just another blunder to add to the list for TH.

My guess is that the majority of those who had pre-BB10 devices will prefer RIM, while the majority of those who had only BB10 devices will prefer BlackBerry.

    I prefer Research in Motion.

I prefer the BlackBerry name simply because it's simple. Consumers want simple. And it rivals the other fruit Apple.

You could call it peach, or advocado, or whatever. The big thing is that there actually needs to be EFFECTIVE marketing. BB10 is a reasonable operating system, with great potential.... that few people know about. (regardless of the name)

Research In Motion was a much better company name than BlackBerry hands down. Long live the RIMPIRE! Sounds better than RIMBERRY.

RIM. Because the company is offering mobile solutions, not just BlackBerry devices. RIM sounds like a company that does more than selling phones.

This is true. I've even experienced this happen in the UK where BlackBerry was more recently a very popular type of phone. A female friend of mine pretty much recoiled in disgust when she thought that my Z30 was a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 from a distance. When I told her it's a BlackBerry she didn't even want to see it.

What do you guys think? Is 'Research In Motion' a better name than 'BlackBerry' for this corporation?
As long as I have one, I don't care what they choose to call it!
Just don't call it late for Dinner.... Alarm, Appointments, or Updates.

I guess the last stipulation is a work in progress. LOL.

Research in Motion would indicate that their research is moving. Seeing how the company has been handled the last few years, indicates their research isn't moving at all. Either that or its seriously flawed. Ask any non blackberry type if they know who RIM is. More than likely they don't. Now ask them about BlackBerry. I'll bet it gets much better response.
