i was in class today (kina of an underground building) and waiting for gps was on google maps. then in my apartment (11th floor) and went to advanced options, gps, menu refresh gps.. took a few minutes saying scanning. now it says N 0 degrees, and W 0 degrees. fix time none, number of satellites 0, accuracy 0.0 m

however, went down stairs outside, and in about a minute i got a reading in options and google maps gave me my location within 10 meters.

is the device's gps messed up???

No... when you attempt to refresh your GPS under Options you need to be outside and have a clear view of the sky... and be willing to stay there for a while.

I usually just stick with GoogleMaps... the GPS picks up my position to within 3 meters in a matter of a couple minutes... plus you get to actually see where you are, unlike the actual latitude and longitude coordinates.

in google maps, when outside, i'l get within 3 meters in about a minute. but when in my bedroom of my apartment, i don't get the gps to work. is this normal, or is my unit defective??

    This Is Normal.

    Global Positioning System

Since it uses satellites... you need to be outside for it to work. It will work in some buildings but not many.

I think you have concept a little upside-down... I think you should be going outside to get the GPS... and for that matter to really get an accurate reading using Google Maps you should be outside as well... not in your closet.

It sounds like your device is just fine... you can not get to within 3 meters without your GPS working correctly... if it was not working you'd be getting about 1,500 to 2,000 meters because it would have to get your location from the local cell tower.

alright so cell phone towers work in buildings, but satellites don't correct?

if it works outside but not in the building, then it's working properly?

If it works when outside with a clear view of the sky, that is normal. GPS won't work indoors in commercial buildings with concrete and steel overhead. It might work in a private residence with a shingle roof.
