I installed the Gmail application. When I receive email I will open my gmail application and read the email. However I find that until I actually open the built in messages area that comes with the Blackberry the unit still thinks I have unread email.

Is the Gmail application really only useful if you want to browse through your emails?

It sounds like you have both the Gmail app and your gmail account added to BIS. They are two separate methods of getting your email.

When I add an application like Gmail do I have to configure notifications for under profiles? Right now it doesn't appear as if my gmail application monitors my gmail account. It seems like I have to log into it in order to know if I have mail or not.

If you are using the Gmail app and the built in email then your new email messages will come to both. But once you read it in the Gmail app it will still remain in the built in blackberry email because it does not constantly check to see if you read it on the gmail app or your online email.

Ok I think I got it now. Disassociate my the default message service from my gmail account and set notifications under profiles for the Gmail application.

You don't need both. They are both redundant and serve the same purpose.
