Essentially, they only shipped 1.3M phones to carriers this past Q
Using the 3:1 ratio, BlackBerry shipped only approximately 430,000 BB10 smartphones.

There's a reason why they don't report such embarrassing figures. Sell through sounds much more impressive.

No carrier has it for sale, some third party sellers might.

Some carriers do, atleast the two I know off here both still offer a variety of OS6 and 7 devices and one of them even the 8520 next to the Z10 and Q10
    Can't generalize on all carriers

Edit: My bad, just saw now that you backed it up with the UK

I would be interested in seeing a graph of BB7 sales quarter by quarter since 2010. I wonder if belfastdispatcher can provide us that graph or at least the numbers.

IIRC, BB10 stood at 5M handsets at the end of last year according to a few sources I'm too lazy to find right now.

So, with the recent results, there are now about 6M BB10 phones out there. I've never seen any attempt to break that figure down, but I reckon it's safe to assume there are vastly more Z10s and Q10s in the mix than there are Z30s and Q5s.

To give some perspective to that BB10 number... Windows Phone, which holds a poor third position in sales compared to Apple and Android, is selling more phones each quarter than BB10 has sold (in total) in the year or so it's been available.

Might be a bit higher. Probably greater than 5 million but less than 10 million sadly

Yeah - my gut was around 6.5 million. Definitely agree on the mix. Maybe 3.5 or 4.0 million of them are Z10s, with 1 or 1.5 being Q10s

Totally an unsubstantiated gut feel. The Q5 seems too expensive and the Z30 is too narrowly available. I suspect the mix of Z10s and Q10s has shifted in the last quarter or two with an increasing portion of Q10s making the mix lately

Too many pieces to fill plus I don't think they could make BB10 use BIS, which is still a reason many still choose BBOS.

    #believeinfilm
Filling in the missing features to make BB10 have all the features of BB7 is very technically possible.

Making legacy BBOS a modern OS is categorically IMPOSSIBLE.

You seem to want (somehow) to turn an abacus (e.g.: legacy BlackBerryOS) into a modern mobile operating system (like all other mobile OS's). It can't happen. It CANNOT happen.

BBOS has already been pushed as far as it can go. The solution is to make the BB10 user experience better for legacy users. The solution is NOT to keep developing legacy BBOS.

You're like one of these guys that, 10 or so years ago, argued BlackBerry should "keep expanding the functionality of the BlackBerry pager" rather than develop BBOS. The problem is that BBOS is just way way way too outdated. It's reached the natural end of its life. It cannot continue. It's architecture and development paradigm can longer be extended.

    Hope this sinks in somewhat.

Oh, and yes, they could certainly make BB10 use BIS. The reasons they haven't have nothing to do with technology.

BIS is an extra charge for carriers. When BlackBerry (BB6 / BB7) started to lose their cache as the "must have" device and sales started to plummet (in light of the iPhone), the carriers started putting pressure on BlackBerry to drop the service fee for BIS.

BIS was dropped for business reasons, not technical reasons. BB10 can technically use any network protocol stack -- including BIS.

Surely they could allow BIS as an optional add on for BB10 handsets?

Those who want to pay for it can do.

Why would anyone want to pay over and above their current data rate plan for BIS?

Not everybody did, in UK for example a data plans for BB or android cost exactly the same, for the same amount of data, only on BIS that data would stretch a lot longer.

I completely agree with this. The immediate task for the BB10 team is to make sure that everything people love about BB7 and the Bold is there in spades in the BB10 devices. This of course should have been the goal on day 1, and the company would have been in a very different place now if they had done that. But be that as it may, they *have* to do that this year with the Q20.

I have no faith that blackberry can do this anymore.
Most of the people responsible for legacy is gone and the bb10 team does not seem to know much about legacy.
