Think it's more they are looking for other areas of growth, as the smartphone business isn't what it once was - as far as growth goes.

Makes sense. Pure chip performance is slowing down (just look at stuff like Kaby Lake), so expanding into new areas like automotive, VR, and machine learning seems like the new path forward.

The new qualcomm snapdragon chip uses "10nm" finFET technology. The actual physical gate length is 18-20nm. The clock frequency is only 10% higher than that of the Snapdragon 801 in my Passport, but it does have higher levels of integration, more functionality and lower chip size compared to 801 which runs at 2.1GHz, as opposed to 2.4 GHz, and is in 28nm LP CMOS.

The new Snapdragon also has security embedded at the hardware level and the Google tensorflow machine learning library built in, so Google can hoover your data and know you much better than before.

The real problem is that the smartphone business has gone the same way the laptop and TV businesses before them.

All hardware companies are looking for new growing markets. The smartphone market is saturated and not cool anymore.

Plus, other CPU makers are stealing Qualcomm's share of the pie; Apple, Samsung and Huawei for the higher end, Mediatek for the lower end, Nvidia for tablets and netbooks, maybe Google in the future.

apple law suit might got something to do with it. with chinese 1B payoff, 60% device price as part of settlement, 47 Billion of NXP buying must be hard on it as well.... it should take BB money to make bb10 work... (too late).
Qualcomm stock went down 12% after the apple suit.... BB should get better deal if pick up a phone to call ;-)

Trump's next target is H1B visas, which doesn't bode well for Qualcomm and most other tech companies.
