It's sad, but it's not as if Chen's BlackBerry doesn't deserve it. Let bright minds do great work somewhere while they're still able! right? Chen's not interested in being creative any longer. The corporate culture must be poisonous these days.

I don't think that is necessarily true. I agree BBRY will not be creative in hardware but IMO they weren't competitive in that respect anyway. But software is their new focus and they are by no means strongly in the lead here. They must be proactive and clever in this arena or they will not prosper.

One of the biggest factors holding down the company is the focus that the hardware division gathers in the news. If that can be turned around and the company become profitable while growing revenues, EPS etc than the investor sentiment will change.

One of the biggest factors holding down the company is the focus that the hardware division gathers in the news. If that can be turned around and the company become profitable while growing revenues, EPS etc than the investor sentiment will change.

Anyone can change a company from losses to even, cut cut cut costs, a real CEO gets a company back where it was or better.

But a real CEO with the capability that you want, just aren't that easy to find... if they were there are a number of very large companies out there today that would hire them long before BlackBerry could.

Chen has done exactly what he said... cut cost and focused on software. It's only those that refused to listen for the last three years that are wondering why the sky has fallen on them. Even today Chen gets very frustrated when asked about hardware.... because some just don't want to belive that BlackBerry is pretty much done.

They'll relabel a few devcies and sell those as add ons for Good/BES and a few "fans" that can't get a PKB anywhere else....

How exactly does Dan Dodge going to Apple suddenly devolve into a debate over handsets? To this day, QNX is managed as an individual unit from the rest of what people think of as BlackBerry.

Dan built a very successful embedded system that really doesn't need to be revamped or rebuilt because even now the core of QNX could fit on a floppy. The development is done so that all that is really left is window dressing and extensibility. Likely Dan had faith in the team he had in place and decided that it was time to retire. That said, some people can't stay retired. If you were given the challenge of trying to build another successful team and project and were looking to get back into the field, why wouldn't you look to take advantage of an offer? If you're Apple, why wouldn't you look to bring in someone responsible for the biggest player in a market you don't have experience in?

Just because companies like Apple are known for their phones doesn't mean that every decision and hiring they make is geared towards that side of operations.

Maybe they just want to be able to run on top of QNX and provide the UI. Maybe they want to be the ones fully controlling a driverless car. Either way they what Apple is doing will hurt BlackBerry and their dreams of expanding QNX into more aspects of the car and beyond. This is similar to the problem that BlackBerry faced with smartphones.... once a company with more resources comes along, it becomes very difficult to "keep up" and to compete.

Sad thing is that Apple will probably soon spend more on develpment for this project than BlackBerry the company is even worth.

Makes perfect sense since the rumor of Apple making a car. They should just buy QNX. Probably tried before. But, hiring this guy could lead to picking up top QNX employees.

Seems like a natural acquisition. BlackBerry is doing nothing with this asset but racking up small profits. It is worth more in the hands of a company like Apple. Blackberry could raise more cash by selling the company and then use it to build more rebranded Chinese devices.

The fact that it is Blackberry's only profitable business is not a reason to keep it.
