That happens because of the horror that is iMessage.
It uses a different compression technique that (as can be expected) is only friendly with other iPhones.
They will need to use a proper cross-platform message service like WhatsApp, Telegram, Line, Viber, FB Messenger, Signal, or other.
And if they do go through, they look terrible!
and that's how Apple gets some people to buy Apple. They don't play nice with others. They profit from the "my friends have Apple and I want to play in the same sandbox" mentality.
It's a common issue.... https://www.macworld.com/article/339...ice-versa.html
RCS might help if you provider is supporting it yet, but there are several "options".
It's actually kind of funny that this happens here in the US. My best friend lives in Germany and uses iPhone BUT everyone there in Europe (according to him) uses Whatsapp (because as Conite noted is cross platform) so that's what I added to communicate with him across the pond. Zero issues between us on my BlackBerry on any share types. *It's only here in the US that many iMessage users don't use another app to communicate and that naturally has to do with the % of users. Is that similar in Canada or do many use cross platform types?
Ask your friend to go to:
Settings - Camera - Formats - and switch to Most Compatible
Have you got VCL video player installed?
It has good support for multiple codecs
That's not the issue.
Adjust to most compatible, or disable iMessage and use traditional text messaging, e.g. video message (mms), though, resolution will be horribly low (176x144) or enable RCS and not deal with the lowest resolution possible.
