"It seems the smartphone that the president received, which he didn�t identify, isn�t as smart as the typical device anyone else can buy in a local Verizon Wireless store, as the president mentioned to talk show host Jimmy Fallon on Thursday night."

It doesn't specify if the new phone is another modified BlackBerry or if it's something else.

It's better that BB not be associated with the Oval Office as the capabilities of a POTUS device doesn't really match with what people think of a smartphone and only further serves the perception that BB is way behind technologically.

For the sake of national security, I am glad POTUS didn't let on who makes his new smartphone. I wish, though, it's a modified Classic without the camera but souped up internals. I'm sure hackers will soon be able to find out if it's an Android phone Obama now has. If he did go this route, then I'm really worried about the United States' national security. If possible someone should catch the President in public with his new smartphone and take a quick pic of it.

What a joke of a phone. It's lower spec than any current Android flagship, still stuck on 5.1.1, and uses encrypted apps that are already available for anyone out there. I guess if they sell one of these they already made money.

State of art in that what it does do, it does very securely. Who knows what else it is capable of, might not even use cell towers....

Just because he can't post a selfie on Instagram or play Game of War with Arnold... doesn't mean it isn't stat of the art.

It's something like a military grade modified Blackberry:
- No microphone (so even if hacked, no 1 can eavesdrop your environment)
- No camera (so even if hacked, no 1 can spy on you)
- So no voice/video call
- Text messaging is not allowed (SS7 is vulnerable and calls and texts can be easily diverted)

Maybe you ask what he can do?? Good question! only text based communication like emails, passed through an E-2-E encrypted channel, which other end is also such a safe device or infrastructure.

Update: And maybe a panic button, to self destruct the phone and it's data in critical situations.

Yeah it's been confirmed he's using a Knox hardened Galaxy S4.

I wonder how he's getting used to typing without a physical keyboard. I remember switching from my 9810 to Z10 and thinking I'd never get the hang of typing on glass.

I still miss the physical keyboard. Miss blind typing without need for auto correct. If only they has put a decent physical keyboard on the Priv I'd still be using BlackBerry.

Oh well. Maybe T-Mobile will bring back the Sidekick.
