I thought I read somewhere that internally RIM considers the PlayBook as BB8 and BB9.
    PlayBook 1.x = BlackBerry 8
    PlayBook 2.x = BlackBerry 9

I guess it's possible to see BB 7.2 and above for more features.

Highly unlikely RIM is spending any more time on developing the Java based BB7 OS. They've got too much work on their hands with BB10.

all though i believe RIMM will continue to work on os7 with some updates and such , there main focus is BB10, and making that the best experience out there.

i doubt we will see anything further than 7.something.

Some info about an S model with BBOS has already been leaked, BBOS lives on, as low end option no doubt but it lives on.

I'd love to see a "light" version of OS 10 (call it OS 8) become available to at least the 9900. Give us the BB10 platform stripped down a bit, similar to how MS is creating Win phone 7.8 for their older devices.

I think RIM should do better work in OS 10 stuff and need to think what users want, keeping its original style that RIM have keep happy their customers.

There is still a huge market for BBOS. I remember people saying they should get rid of it last summer. Shows how wrong they were. BB10s not for everybody, but it will be for a lot of people, and industries for that matter. BBOS will have its place in the market for a while. OS 8? who knows, but It'll be around for a while.

Considering service revenues from Carriers relating to BB OS products still represent a huge chunk or RIM's revenue stream, I'd say that until BB 10 has an 80 million user installed base and they have supplemented the fees they charge carriers with something else or new BB 10 carrier fees, that legacy BB OS will still be the revenue leader for RIM for a couple years yet.

I wouldn't disagree with that - the problem is - it's not enough - the services revenues is simply limiting losses not resulting in profits.

The ideal strategy imho would be to push BB10 as much as possible. With the legacy OS so fragmented, RIM could push older OS (<7) to extinction and then have their userbase across legacy OS and BB10. With the service revenue from the legacy OS, it makes some sense to have it around for a while (2-3 years tops) by which time BB10 goes mainstream and commercially/financially profitable. This may mean RIM could put out OS8 (or whatever they call it on their legacy OS) with some more features and enhancements to satisfy their growth (read BIS needs) in the developing world like Asia, LatAm, Africa and so on. However, I don't expect any upgrade for their legacy OS till the dust around BB10 settles down. This way they have the best of both worlds; BB10 for mid to high end and legacy OS for low to mid tier.

My only concern is fragmentation (which RIM is still criticized for) and lost focus from a developer standpoint. Another possibility to think about is licensing their either old or new OS or even both (if the new legacy OS remains commercially viable). The ramifications of this approach of having two OS are many, including customers' hesitancy to upgrade to BB10 (where the real profit is) from their legacy OS (where there is a small services fee), marketing nightmares and massive hammering of RIM's image as most people see BB10 as RIM's turnaround, which it does not become.

    Feel free to fire away!

My Dad still uses the BlackBerry Style flip phone that is for Sprint. He runs a farm and plant store. It is the perfect solution for him. Sadly there will most likely never be another flip BB.

Concur. Very pleased with my new 9930, and would dislike seeing support for it phased out within two years - especially if the OS 10 n-Series doesn't answer the mail (read: lack of trackpad hampers it like so many of us expect).
