    So i have been told that these numbers are unique.....what if ur provider goes down........is it really a safe way to stay in touch?

    Each phone has a unique PIn to identify itself. This is mainly used for users to message each other, but there are other uses for a PIN. The RIM servers which carry the pin messages do have outtages sometimes, but it is extremly rare. When it does happen they have it back up pretty quickly.
