The Wall Street Journal today reports that US consumers are no longer purchasing new phones every 23 months as they did in 2014, as has often been quoted in these forums. The average is now 31 months and is expected to rise to 33 months by next year.

This is a HUGE headwind for market leaders Apple and Samsung who have to sell fewer phones at higher prices to maintained revenue and grow profits.

I would expect t a lot of cutthroat competition in the coming year and the likely profit peaks for phone sales from the big companies.

I don't really get used to my phone for about a year I mean the phone is just getting comfortable after a year I think phones should come out every 3 years and give you time to enjoy the model! they can always do software updates to keep it fresh until new hardware comes but this every year thing I've always thought is highway robbery I mean you cant even get the phone a few months late until you might as well wait on the new one

I think it might be due in part to the pace of pure tech improvements slowing down, same deal with CPUs feeling the same for the past few generations now.

Well if the most significant "innovation" right now is the notch, then yeah, no reason to upgrade at all.

Yeah I built my PC in 2016 and I won't upgrade it until 2020 when I switch off Windows 7. Not once have I thought "I wish it was faster."

Hoping by then the ridiculous RAM and video card prices have ended.

if the Keyone hadn't come out I probably would have planned to keep my Priv until it died, since there was no other keyboard option out there. at least I have an upgrade path now.

I had planned on keeping my S7 I picked up from my sister for 200 (She had it from a BOGO deal) last year for at least a couple years. Then T-Mobile offered me 360 for a trade in on the S9 and I bit. The fact that it is capable of the 600 spectrum, a stellar camera, best screen made and small foot print for a 5.8 in screen did not hurt. I would upgrade my DTEK50 for the Motion for out son if BlackBerry Mobile had a trade in offer.
