I'm getting to grips with my first Blackberry (Pearl 8120).
Are there any screen icons to let you know which profile you have set?
I can't see any, also when I press the mute button on the top left no icon appears. If I hold it too long it goes into standby.

Also, does he know when he's in his holster?I got the impression from the manual that profiles change when holstered.

    Thanks.

Depending on the theme there should be an icon that will
show your profile. Mine currently looks like a speaker.

As to whether the phone (it's not a he) know it is in the holster,
if the holster has a magnet the phone will go into standby. It
will not automatically change the profile, but you can set in and
    out of holster profiles yourself.

Why would you expect an icon to appear if you press the standby button? This puts the phone in, well, standby. I'm not entirely sure what it is you want to see in this case....

Look at the top right corner of your screen with the image of a speaker...thats your current profile. For the exact image of each profile, see your list of profiles. Its always a modified image of the speaker with a visual cue attributed to the particular profile.

@ADberry, just to add on, in some third party themes it won't
always be on the right. I just changed back to the Vista Blank
theme and the profile icons is on the top left. But the icon will
be obvious no matter the theme.

Thanks, I changed from the Orange theme it was set with when it came to a Blackberry theme and the speaker icon appeared.
The mute button is on the top of the phone on the left.
It has a picture of a bell with a line through it.
If I press it nothing happens.
If I hold it the phone goes into standby.
    Any ideas please?

Are you trying to change your profile? A bell with a line through it means "silent".

The mute button is not for changing profiles. It is for:
    1. Muting the phone when you receive a call
    2. Putting the phone in standby

    To change your profile:

Go to your menu screen>click on profiles>select the profile that says "normal"
