I've heard the Playbook OS referred to as QNX in an article I read from the UK. Is that the case or is there significant additional layers on the Playbook OS?
I assume there are additional layers for the UI, at the very least.

The Playbook OS uses the QNX kernel. The UI and many of the other system bits are custom built for the Playbook or modified from neutrino.
QNX is just a part of the Playbook OS, although arguably the most important part.
