Something some people don't often notice but is extraordinarily useful is the ability to use the trackball to control an actual mouse pointer while web browsing. IT is useful to click on all the little links that can be hard to touch on a smartphone. It also makes it seem as if you are actually browsing on a computer, not on a cheesy, watered down version of the mobile web. While BlackBerry 10 will take web browsing and make it even better (even adding Flash support; is that on any other phone?) I am wondering how RIM will compensate for the loss of the trackpad? Maybe a tiny little optical trackpad? I would like the trackpad to stay in some form, to back up all the great work being done with BB10.

Can one mod a BlackBerry 10 phone to add a trackball?

Actually, with the right tools (user agent and the ability to pinch and zoom), a device should be able to be fine and cover your concerns.

I will miss cursor placement and text selection without zooming. Here's to hoping the pinch to zoom is extrememly smooth and fast

I'd really like to see a virtual arrow pad, like the one that can be brought up with a gesture on the Swype keyboard.

One thing that will be missed with the trackball death, and can it be helped?-swype-arrows.png

This makes selecting and manipulating text pretty efficient. But it should be globally available, not just in text entry fields.

Try doing it with one hand.

I'm guessing it will work similar to what's currently on the PlayBook.

I think a double tap will zoom in with BB10, then tap on the zoomed in link.

OP, for navigating in a BB10 device you will have the screen while on the move only, or you will have an external BT or USB keyboard and mouse and/or touchpad.

Maybe someone should make a tiny BT optical pad for BB10 devices that can be velcro'd onto the phone for people that are terrified of an all touch future. RIM has optimized the BB10 UI for one handed, one finger/thumb use. The optical pad, trackball and scroll wheel die with BBOS.

The trackball is already dead, it's the trackpad that will be dying now.

I think this (virtual arrow keys) is a great idea! I've wanted this on several occasions with my PlayBook

Personally, I much prefer the optical trackpad to any current solution. I won't list my MANY reasons because it is pointless. However, I can move on and will gladly for a better device. Heck, if I like this new device more, I might even pluck the trackpad out of my 9810 and glue it to my new device. Then, I can stroke it gently while mumbling "my precious".

Gives me chills just think about it.

What about this idea? an OPTION TO PAY A PREMIUM FOR A TRACKPAD ON A BB10 PHONE? I would do it. Or someone might figure out a mod for it.

And people were wanting to mod their 9000 to have a trackpad when the 9700 came out. Its useless, hopeless desperation that will never work or get you anywhere. There will be no mod possible. Bluetooth keyboards and such are another matter!!!
