I am the happy recipient of a new Z10 I purchased as part of the Shop BlackBerry Black Friday special...when they were on sale for $199. Daughter will be thrilled Christmas morning.

Have a look at the build date. November 21st, 2013. Just over two weeks ago. When you factor in shipping, this is amazing. Factory floor to customer in two weeks.

So the head scratcher. BlackBerry wrote down hundreds of millions in unsold Z10s. I thought I was going to receive a dusty old phone that had been made 10 months ago.

How is it that the are still making Z10s instead of selling off old stock. Is there more to this story?

It is and the more I think about it I am inclined to think it is not a manufacturing date but a date that it went into circulation. Given that the warranty is for one year a date that close makes sense to me in that light.

Perhaps the majority of unsold Z10's are STL-1s that would explain it.

Weren't those models sold primarily in countries / regions that had better sales than North America?

Doesn't mean they didn't over produce that model

Heres the box from my Z10, I got this one on Feb 5. Seems like it could be a build date, or something along those lines.

Never said or suggested it meant that but I would think if there were excess inventory it would more than likely be in the region that had the lowest sales. That would be the STL-3, no?

Just out of curiosity, can you look in your Z's for the date also?

I would expect the STL100-4 to be the majority of the models that had to be written down. There were rumours Verizon ordered a whole bunch of Z10s, and I don't think they ended up selling many; the STL100-4 is exclusive to Verizon. The other models were all available on multiple carriers.

People keep assuming that the inventory which was written down consisted entirely of fully assembled phones. If BlackBerry buys a few million Z10 size screens, then that is inventory. Or if they buy a few million completed boards, then it is also inventory. It's not just fully assembled phones.

So they could still be assembling phones today from parts that were previously written down.

it's recirculated for warranty I believe. Look at the OS, it is still on 10.1 wasn't 10.2 released before 21st?

All base models(not at its launch of course) start with 10.1 unless it's the Z30.

So why don't they have any stl100-4 for that price? If they did I would buy another one for my wife but they are not available. Pretty weird right?

It is the date they were boxed. My impression is that the third party like Digital River receives the phones and then puts them into the packaging specific to the region they are sold in.
