    i have a data plan and a regular service plan.

    i sometimes travel in an area with no service... just wifi.

    will bbm work here?

    Yes, BBM will work over WiFi as long as you have the data plan and the SIM card is inserted into the device. Email will not work, however. You still might have trouble sending the message... If you do I'd recommend leaving WiFi on and turning the mobile network off.
