I was surprised to discover that new Blackberries do not have these metal tabs that were a signature feature of RIM phones in the past? Why would they do away with such an awesome feature? Saves the wear and tear on the USB jack, and you could simply drop the phone into cradle instead of messing with wires. Shame.

Also why charging docks are hard to find.

Not enough demand. People no longer just charge their phones in one place, and also tend to have chargers all over and use them for many different devices. If you have to unplug your charger from the dock all the time (to charge something else), it becomes more of a hassle than it is worth.

And, as Gatmyer pointed out, wireless inductive charging is the future, or, rather, the present.

I miss them too. I have a dock for every BlackBerry I have owned, last one being the 9900.

    Always on my bedside.

Many people use cases that didn't allow the docks to work.

    Yeah, me too.

After I upgrade next month my 9900 will still remain as my alarm clock sitting in the dock.

Never could understand why they removed the charging contacts. Surely it can't be an expensive feature to implement?

People are in for a huge surprise when their Z10s and Z30 micro USB starts failing after 18 months.... I came from the torch touch, trust me, at least 10 people around me had to send their phones into blackberry for $150 fix only halfway through their contract...

I never noticed that but you are right. I always have a charger with me and at my normal 3 locations. I never thought about wireless charging but as pointed out not all holsters /carriers allow for plug in chargers.

Q10 doesn't offer wireless charging or docking cradle. It was an attempt to save money on a phone priced as premium. Hopefully Chen will change some of the major mistakes of the last guy who was just out to make a quick buck, and bring back some premium features for BBs target users.

I wonder if the upcoming Q20 will regain these contacts.

I have had a cell phone since the 25 minute brick Motorola.
Never once have I had a charging port screw up.

Hopefully, if I'm careful, I can keep batting 1000

I somehow don't think it will. Unless Chen is listening to what we want. Here's hoping.
