My take on it is this phone is great as an entry level product. Not all BB's need to cost as much as a Bold to be accepted. Want a BB for your teenager? Get this one.

I just downgraded from a 9530 to an 8130 (granted, I sold the Storm for $200 and bought the Pearl for $25 and used the $175 to pay a bill that was hanging over my wife's and my heads). My Pearl, while not as pretty as the Storm is stable and reboots much quicker, lol. Having said that, if a company mass deploys BBs and needs to upgrade, models like the 85xx are perfect (like the 83xx used to be). Not everyone needs a high-end BB model, you know. Sometimes, less really is more, so to speak.

Wouldn't gps and flash on the camera be kind of nice for a teenager?

Correct. Plenty of people have their own camera, and their own GPS navigation. This device is targeted directly at the corporate users you described above.

    Why?

I'm all for sexting but it's not a requirement in school. GPS might be nice but certainly not a requirement. People have done without them for ages. Plus then the kid needs a data plan for using maps, and will want more for internet browsing, on and on and on.

This way you get them a simple BB and one of those unlimited email only plans. Perfect!

Wait so you're gonna get them a BB smart phone that they can't use chat clients, social networking in general (outside of basic email), web browsing or navigation because they require data plans? That seems borderline pointless. This basically goes back to the whole argument about buying BB's and trying to force it to work with no data plan...

Why not just get them a non BB phone with only voice + SMS instead. Why would you choose a server based phone solution when you have pre-determined you don't want a data plan...

I honestly don't know what kind of parent you are, but that outlook scares the heck out of me.

You would seriously let your teenager free on the internet at all times without supervision? Not me, safety first. If they are old enough for all that then they are old enough to get a job and pay for a data plan.

There are many advantages to BB's. For instance, in a world where kids are graded most harshly by their peers a BB is a nice status symbol if they care about that sort of thing.

The BB is perfect for staying in touch with parents using BB Messenger. Simple, reliable and doesn't count against the SMS plan.

All the apps that can be installed that don't need an internet connection. Calculators, scheduling stuff, maybe some sort of homework aides.

There are many reasons to get a BB like this.

Seriously, I don't care to get into an e-parenting match with some random person on the internet...

Yeah you're a good parent because you *know* how to handle teens and BB's. Congrats...

I don't agree. I think having multiple devices out is a good thing. Gives the customers plenty to choose from. Also, if you knew the plan and how all of these fit into planned future and what the goals were, you would understand.
Also, I believe you all are making things out to be more than it is.
If you really sit back and look at all the devices/carriers, it pretty much makes sense.

Not teens and BB's, teens and internet. It is very unsafe and that is my point. All routers locked down after a certain time, no access. I know many parents who follow this.

I just worry about the convenience of setting up and meeting with someone while walking around with a connected mobile. Make one mistake, it's gonna cost someone forever. It's not the final solution of course, but it is an added level of safety for the typical know-it-all invincible kid out there.

Anyways, leaving the BB parenting section now...

Choices are better than no choices. I still wish RIM ventured into uncharted designs instead of having as many similar iterations as they do though (whether it makes sense or not, doesn't really matter to anyone on the outside).

Slider would be awesome, but I imagine it will be a long, long time...

Actually, there is another point. Military and specialist government organizations will love this. If you go to certain places you absolutely CANNOT take anything with a camera or removable media with you. It is strictly prohibited.

I have been in one place like that in the past and had to leave my phone behind. My buddy works in a place that if you take any removable media in, it is only allowed to come out after it has been put through the incinerator.

Can the new track pad not be considered like a slider? Maybe with the right firmware it could act like one more or less. Or just extend the track pad to the width of the device and have it multi purpose. That might be a good idea.

I like this thing. It's nothing if not cheap to acquire. The optical thing is cool. If you don't want a data plan you can WiFi browse for free (I think). SMS you can pay for. And it's a nice phone to boot, don't forget that. I think that's why Razrs are still around, they're nice looking easy to use phones even still. In the day they were the sexiest thing available.

Unless they're making a cameraless version, the 8520 has a camera... Just no flash...

The trackpad is completely different than a slider. Slider is a phone keyboard layout. The main benefit of a slider is that you get the full sized screen (similar to a Storm) and maintain a full qwerty keyboard. That's impossible to substitute on a phone where half of the device is taken up by a keyboard.

    Right, my mistake.

Desolder it perhaps. Or the old icepick in the lens trick. If it's cheap I don't mind performing surgery.

Agreed. My son is 10 and not allowed to be on the internet without either his mother or myself in the room. And as he moves into his teenage years, it will be monitored very closely.

Yes and many corporations want devices with no cameras. The main point is this, corporations want good hardware for a good price, with the compatibility and security features they need. This device fits that bill.

I never thought of that angle, low cost BES device. No need for flash cards or extraneous data not related to the company.

I imagine bulk pricing for this device will make it very attractive indeed.

I have to admit i am very intrigued the 8520. I am currently using a 8900 - and i work in the automotive field. so getting greasy/oily/dirty and trying to use my 8900 kinda makes a chill run up my spine. and with having the "trackpad" no more grimie trackballs getting stuck, no more ripping the trim ring out of my 8100, no more anything. and with the top of the phone having media control buttons, i know when a case comes out, i won't even have to remove the phone from my pocket to change songs.

maybe, i know when i was a teenage my parents tried "beatings", groundings, extra chores - what ever..... i just did what i wanted to do anyway.

i mean don't get me wrong i never broke the law or did just do the opposite what my parents said. but i did run along side of the road from time to time, in fact still do. but that's a different story.

The main reason I'm interested in the 8520 is that it's the test platform for the new trackpad and will probably weigh heavily on moving forward with it or not.

Yeah but if its just a backup phone you could just as easily opt for a Razr or any phone really (83xx, pearl flip, 3g pearl, etc). I can't picture a lot of people selling their Bold/8900 to buy this

Personally I wouldn't opt for a backup phone that lacks gps and no flash (cameras with no flash border on useless a lot of the time)
Posted from my CrackBerry at wapforums.crackberry.com
If I'm working in a high risk wet environment all day there is no way I need GPS, flash is useless and I don't want my Bold getting wet or dropped from height. However I need a phone with email and other basic BB business functions, and a low spec BB is perfect because I can switch all my traffic to the reserve device with a few clicks.

Why not one of the older models? because we look to the future here and leave the options open for all low spec devices as backup. Whatever is on offer for best price the day it is purchased.

On the same token if the flash is useless so is the camera.
If you remove the camera then it's an easier to sell to higher security job markets...
