NO Flash, NO GPS? Why downgrade to this phone?

You're not gonna upgrade or downgrade anything... 8520 is for GSM.

Kevin *thinks* we'll see a full line. 8510 with GPS, and 8530 for CDMA. But with the EDGE radio used on the 8520 don't bet on 4G, but rather a Rev 0 radio, or less.

This phone is almost completely legacy 83xx hardware, most likely destined for the Go-phone market. RIM is simply putting good, proven, working technology into a lower-cost demographic. It might also be a cheaper way to test the trackpad idea before integrating it into the rest of their products.

this is a media phone. dedicated buttons for mp3 use. everyone is haggling the specs but this is not meant to take the spotlight. just get more bb into more hands. especially teens and young professionals who use their phones for media purposes. also not not meant to replace the 8900 or bold. revolutionary or not, its still a bb and someone will buy it.05-05-09 10:48 PMLike 0 -

I think physically the phone looks really nice but i wouldnt ever pick one up with all the other choices for GSM carriers. I would choose the Bold or 8900 way before choosing the 8520. I also dont like the fact that they decided to take out the trackball for the optical track pad. One thing i love about my berries is the trackball and i dont think i could tolerate one without it. I wouldnt consider this an upgrade from the 8330 or 8310 either. It really only looks upgraded. But everyone has their own opinion and i would really like to have a hands on with the 8520 just to test drive it.05-06-09 05:56 PMLike 0 -

Well, think of it this way, the Flip is a niche-type of device, seems odd to a number of us, but fills a demand that some like. The Bolds and 8900 fill a segment, the Curves fill a broader segment.
I like seeing that there are devices that fill in and give people options. The lower-end segment of our market can feel some love, too. How many variations do you see in a devices' life-cycle? How many Curve models? How many use all of the features they have now?
Downgrade isn't necessarily a bad thing, for some folks, this will still be a major upgrade from a dumb phone.

EXACTLY!
This berry was developed to capture the low end users who are considering Berries but dont have the cash to fork out on one of the High-End Types(bold, Jevelin, Storms....etc)
plus this phone actually looks like the Bold/Jevelin in design & the media keys are simply there to again....attract low end users. i'm pretty sure most Bold users are more into applications and email than mulitmedia - the average phone users who is typically all about ringtones & wallpapers will LOVE this berry.
PLUS why not make a low end phone and capture that market, getting them hooked and maybe in a yr or 2 they may want to upgrade to a high end Berry.
its all about target market - so if u already have a Berry (83xx upwards) then this phone is NOT for U

Ummm, are you forgetting that the 8330 is on CDMA? The 8520 should be compared to 8310 and 8320, seeing as those are GSM.
Although, it's probably expected that this Curve line will also hit CDMA carriers. Let's hope the 8900 hits first.

Not sure why people are freaking out about this berry. Seems evident if you compare the 8320 ad 8520 that you loose the flash (not that big of a deal since the 2MP cam is best outdoors), you can media buttons, optical trackball, 4x RAM, slicker casing, and the newer OS. Are you really going to cry over the flash (oh yeah, and the portrait mirror)? People comparing this to 8330 need to remember an 8530 would have the same psuedo 3G that the 8330 has. So again, you loose the flash and gain the other bits. Not bad I say if you aren't jonesing for the latest berry like most of us on these forums.
