i've read so many threads on this topic and i feel like i've tried everything except throwing it against the wall. but, maybe somebody has an idea i havent tried, so here goes...
i upgraded to 4.5 a few days ago after backing everything up and downloading the new desktop manager. it all went amazingly smooth. however, when i tried to restore my old info, it would do well until it got to restoring the sevice book. it freezes and eventually the desktop manager would just close. i'm not even sure what the service book is.
here's what i've tried
*rolled back dsktp mngr from 4.6 to 4.5
*wiped my bb and started over
*taken battery out
*tried synchronizing (which leaves me with a "connector specific error")
*in synch. i reset configuration
*and viewed log which revealed "internal error 4238"
*in back up and restore/advanced settings i cleared calender/tasks/service book/adress book
*and tried manually synching certain things like address book/tasks etc. (which appeard to work, but didn't do anything.)
*also tried manually synching the service book, being as that was where it would freeze... it still freezes.
i'm at a loss. somebody please help. at the very least i just want to synch my contacts.
I had the exact same problems, except the sync would stop at profiles or browser cache. Can't say for sure but it seems like my problems started when I installed DM 4.6. I completely uninstalled 4.6 from my system and installed DM 4.5 Afterwards I deleted the offending files from my BB, removed the Bat for a reset and then did a backup. It worked for me. I also had the connection issue. It could be a bad cable. All of a sudden I started having that problem. Replaced the cable with an extra I had and it worked. Hope this helps. BTW, you can resend your service books by logging in to your BB online account.

Reason: 4 to 4.5 Added service books
thank you so much for getting back to me. i'm gonna try a new cord.
so since the service book is the apparent plroblem i can delete it from my .ipd back-up file? then do the backup? i'm a little confused about what the service book actually is.
ok. new cord didn't work. "clearing" the service book from my bb, then restting it, then trying to restore didn't work. does anyone know anything about this resending of your service book from the bb website?
please excuse all the things i don't know yet, but what does bis mean? and is a service book something special of mine or something thats the same on every blackberry?
Basically Service books enable the various services of yiour BB and configure how your BB interfaces with the BB infrastructure. You can google Service Books and get a very good description of what they do.
here's a kicker.
the website says there is already an account for my pin. but, the website says my username and password is incorrect, so i asked for my password to be sent to my bb. it says a username and password don't exist for this pin and "please use your device to access bbinternet service". what!!?? so i have an account, but no username and password. make any sense to anyone? why is this so freakin difficult!!??

I ran into exactly the same situation. I though I had created the account from the device and got those same prompts.
I ran the setup wizard again, when through the same sequence and it worked fine after the second try...
so close, right? unfortunately i tried to transfer things one by on in the advanced section. it looked as if it was going to work, but ultimately did nothing.
so i was told by blackberry/AT&T support that my backup file isn't compatible with the new 4.5.0.81. which is why i'm having difficulty restoring my phone after the upgrade. i'm at my wits end. i guess i'm gonna have to go back to the old os, unless anyone has any last minute advice.
i hear anything above 4.3 has video recording and some other fixins'.
if this is true does anyone think downgrading to 4.3 instead of the dreaded at&t 4.2 might have more of a chance of being compatible with my backup file?
well, i downgraded. and i STILL have the same problem. so i was thinking my backup file must be corrupt. so surely i could just synch up through outlook express. nope. still get the "connector specific error" message. so is it outlook?
