What ever happened to the idea of "consequences"?

Doesn't mean the same as "punishment", always. But kids these days need to KNOW there will be CONSEQUENCES for unacceptable behaviour.

Yes, it's confrontational. Parenting often is.

What if her daughter turns off the GPS on the device? If that's what the app feeds off of, if she disables the GPS that in turn would disable the app, correct?

I think you may be under estimating many of today's youth. Kids are hacking into highly secure networks now a days, with no formal training in computer programming. If a sophisticated BB user could disable the app, what makes any of us think that a couple highly motivated teenagers wouldn't be able to find a way to do the same?

Every kid found a way around the program their parents put on the computer to block them from viewing sites that were deemed unacceptable (porn), I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that they could do the same on a BB.

I'm just as guilty as most everyone else on here for texting while driving. I know I shouldn't, but from time to time I do, and I need to stop, I know this. Other than taking the BB away from her, I don't see any possible way that you'll be able to keep her from using her phone while she drives, aside from taking over her body... I don't think that's an option...
The application checks to see if GPS is disabled. If yes, application sends message to text or email a parent sets up on the phone.

    To the OP...

You need to catch her? Be a parent and handle the situation. You clearly know its happening or you expect it to happen in the near future.

I guess I don't really know what the point of asking about apps cause its not like you are trying to really parent your kid anyway. You are expecting some application to babysit your kid, instead of teaching her what not to do.

You say you appreciate everyone's answer, but again...you don't want to hear anything that anyone is saying. You just want some app to do the job for you.

speedtracker - your app sounds great. It's similar to what Garmin (I think) built into their GPS devices. If the car is in motion, it will not let you do anything. If my TomTom had a similar feature I probably would not have rear ended someone while looking for the closest 7-11.

While I think the OP would have some benefits from your app, I think it would just be a band aid to the bigger problem.

The OP is afraid to be a parent.

The OP is afraid to be confrontational to their 'little angel' or 'little princess'.

The OP does not want to be a parent. The OP wants 'an app for that'.

OP - if you don't stand your ground now, prepare for a lifetime of your 'little angel' or 'little princess' walking all over you.

There is no app to replace proper parenting. I bet that you know more about the car in your avatar than you do about your own 'little princess'.

Take the car and phone away, I'm young my parents did it to me so I know what its like. It'll make them think twice for real. More than anything what did it for me was having a friend die texting while driving. Nothing is more real than that to a teenager who thinks they are invincible. That was hard for me and I don't wish that on no one. I will say that you have to make this a real subject to them if that makes sense and then trust that they make the right judgements and that you raised them well enough to know what's right to do.

I think there is an app for this but for the life of me i cannot remember the name. Check the appworld and blackberryroacks.com but there is an app that when activated switches off the radio as soon as the device is travelling faster than a set speed (gps use obviously). Only problem is she can turn it off if she wants. or when its on she cannot use it as a passenger.

Bonus point of it are it apparently alerts whoever is calling that you are driving and will get back to them at a convenient time with no notifications on the handset until you are stopped.

I apologise for the lack of app name but i know ive seen it somewhere.

Only one person has said what I was thinking while reading all these posts. If she is using her cell while driving the solution has nothing to do with the phone. TAKE THE CAR AWAY. She is obviously not responsible enough to have the lives of others in her hands since she has at least one hand on her phone. I don't want to be on the road when she is. Take the car away til she realizes that she is driving a lethal weapon.

You need to let your little princess know that you mean business. She needs to know that her phone and driving privileges will be taken away if she does not follow the rules. I am all for you trying out the speedtracker app, but in all honesty YOU are the only thing that will keep her from texting while driving. So YOU need to let her know the consequences that will come into play when she thinks it's a good idea for her to text while she is driving. There is no app out there for good parenting! I mean honestly what did parents do when there was no gps on the phone and the coolest phone out at the time was a brick nokia that you could change the faceplate and put a flashy light on the antenna?

Hello everyone, I am new to CrackBerry.com and was hoping someone can point me in the right direction to find an app that would stop the cell phone from working while driving.
With all the publicity of government regulations against using the cell phone while driving I'm hoping that I can prevent her from getting herself in trouble.

If anyone knows of a good app out there that can prevent the use of the cell phone while driving can you please point me in the right direction.

    Thanks in advance!

The key thought there is that you're WILLING to have the phone disabled.

And to the two kids that say talking and texting while driving is fine, you're right as I can do it, too. However, I'm in support of a new law soon to be passed here that will even outlaw Headsets while driving. Why? Because I tend to watch other drivers while I'm driving, and there they are, flapping their arms around while they converse on their BlueTooth headsets, NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THEIR DRIVING. These are adults, even. Not teens.

THAT'S the key. When I get into a situation while I'm on the phone, I'm paying attention to the car. I don't hear the conversation at all. Now how many kids are going to ignore their friends for something as petty as driving the stupid car?

is she paying for the car and insurance herself? what about phone? if she isnt pay for the car and insurance take it away or threaten to take it away so she will smarten up and not use the phone same with the phone if she isnt paying for it then tell her to hand it over.
I live in toronto , canada and they recently just passed the law of texting while driving ! YUPPERS im 25 and i see alot of people driving and using their phones while driving. I would also say first ticket take away car or cell

Listen everyone, I am not afraid to be confrontational, and I can lay down the law when I need to. If she is caught on the phone she will be punished and I have spoken to her about consequences of being on the phone and driving. I was simply looking for an app that could detect through GPS when the user is traveling a certain speed and turn off communication. I'm not looking for an app so I don't have to parent, some of these posts are ridiculous, I think that you're just trying to get a rise outta me, it's not working ok. I simply asked for direction to find an application that would not allow communication while driving, and thankfully someone has one. I appreciate speedtracker for the reply and all the constructive comments. For those who think I'm a bad parent from the little you know about me on this thread enjoy thinking that way I could honestly not give a **** I do a great job as a parent and your comments are useless.
It so happened that I found one, speedtracker is installed on her phone now and I'm just hoping it will just be like an "insurance" or added initiative to keep her off the phone while driving. I'm a single parent, so I don't want to take the phone away as I need to be able to stay in touch with her in case I'm working late or what not.
Anyhow I hope everyone has a great day and to each their own, remember there are many ways to approach a situation, and also opinions are like *******, everyone has one

If the phone is essential, what about the car? Punishment could start with a week taking the bus. Simple and straight to the point.

I don't presume to tell others how to parent their children.

I do howerver have no probnlem discussing what I think I'd do (My kids aren't old enough to drive or have cell phones yet)

I think DriveSafely is an interesting tool. one that my need to be used dependant on the situation.

What I don't like about it is I don't think it "Teaches" the child anything. Putting a govenor on a car doesn't teach someone NOT to speed it only Prevents them from speeding.

Eventually the child will be in a sitiuation without those constraints, My job as a parent is to prepare them to make the right choices.

So how I plan to handle this type of situation is by educating my children to the dangers involved. Providing them the tools to communicate safely while driving (Bluetooth, Vlingo like software, ETC). I will also install software on the device allowing me to monitor it. Finally I will inform my children what the rules are & the conseqences for breaking them. They will be made aware that I have the ability to monitor them and will do so at my discresion.
