Wow. Nonconfrontational. Are we scared of our kids now. your choices are: be confrontational now or sad at her funeral later and or paying through the nose for the people she killed. I pick confrontational how about you?

Don't mind me, I'm just admiring the FAIL here... The OP is ignoring every suggestion pertaining to actually being a parent. I would laugh, if it wasn't so sad.

I am trying to be a proactive parent here, and I have told my little princess that she is not to be on the phone while driving. I would try beating her, but doubt that would work either I am willing to take the phone away, but then again I want to be able to get a hold of her too.

How will you get ahold her when she is dead or in prison for vehicular homicide? Let's not even talk about the lesson you are teaching or more appropriately not teaching her. I am done this insanity couyld go on forever. I sure no one gets hurt including little princess.

I know, it takes more than that to ruffle my feathers, I'm a chicken hawk at heart
I do agree that the best solution would be for me to punish her if I catch her, but the trick is catching her, wouldn't you agree.
Now my original post was in helping find an app and that's why I have not been commenting on the general census decision to do it the old fashion way. Believe me I'm trying that too, but hey with technology now and I bought her the blackberry, why not utilize any capabilities we can from it.

The free version simply turns off the phone after you install. If your daughter powers on the phone again, the app turns it off again. The free version tells you when ever this happens by telling you SpeedTracker is on.

The paid version lets you set more controls, and notifies you if any of the controls are changed. You also get a message when the app turns off the phone.

There are ways very sophisticated BB users could disable the app, but you would know it was not working because you would not receive the message that the app was turning off the phone.

Give it a try and let me know if it works for you.

    It's vehicular manslaughter... not homicide.

Disable texting if T-Mobile has that feature. I know that Verizon does. YOU can still stay in touch via voice. Of course if you call her while she is driving you are putting her in danger.

Thanks for all your replies, I'm going to try out that speedtracker app out on her tonight first. If that doesn't work I'll call up t-mobile.
Again I really appreciate all the replies, this forum is great! I'll update you all how the speedtracker app works out after we test it out with her. I just found it on the blackberry app world and downloaded it on my phone, went for a drive and sure enough it turned the phone off. I turned it back on immediately, and it turned back off again. When I got back to the office I turned it back on and it seems fine.

Here have your teen watch this:

It's a PSA about cellphone use while driving that was created by a poliece department in England, it's graphic but makes one heck of a point

sadly there is no way your kid is gonna stop, im 21 and do it all the time and so does everyone i know, but def get them a bluetooth; most kids i know including myself can text without looking at the phone so see if she can do that and download that app that reads the texts out to you, maybe see if there is a voice 2 text app too, maybe that will help...

Yes. It is called use it or lose it. Surprisingly they have it for tjhe car too. Works like this your teen uses the cell and car appropriately or he or she will lose the PRIVELEGE of both. Both are privegeles not rights. PM me for more details about the program.

Wow, wish my parents were this slack....

I know for certain, that if I EVER was to text and drive I would be in HUGE trouble by my parents.. NO phone unless in the car and they'd put blocks on it, and no car unless for school.....

Did you ever resolve the issue with your kid driving? If that was me my dad would have beaten my ******* ***, then he would have taken the cell phone off of me and then the car.

If this were my kid I would issue some tough ******* love.

Get her to watch that video showing a car crash that was a PSA in england. Shock her into good behavior. Software and hardware solutions don't teach her about responsibility. Make her accountable for her own actions. We don't see that enough, we want someone else to solve it for us. Part of your responsibility as a parent is passing on responsibility to your children. It's not easy, but needs doing.

This is the BEST advice I've read on this thread...I have a 16 year old daughter that is just starting to drive and she already knows she is not allowed to use the cell phone while driving AT ALL.....as in NO texting and NO calls unless it's an emergency.

I feel for the OP she's trying to stop her daughter from doing something dangerous but she knows that teens think their invincible. The best course is to talk to her about the dangers and explain the ramifications if she hurts or kills someone. Better still maybe find someone to speak to her who has already felt the ramifications of texting while driving. It's hard being a good parent. Do the best you can.

What if her daughter turns off the GPS on the device? If that's what the app feeds off of, if she disables the GPS that in turn would disable the app, correct?

I think you may be under estimating many of today's youth. Kids are hacking into highly secure networks now a days, with no formal training in computer programming. If a sophisticated BB user could disable the app, what makes any of us think that a couple highly motivated teenagers wouldn't be able to find a way to do the same?

Every kid found a way around the program their parents put on the computer to block them from viewing sites that were deemed unacceptable (porn), I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that they could do the same on a BB.

I'm just as guilty as most everyone else on here for texting while driving. I know I shouldn't, but from time to time I do, and I need to stop, I know this. Other than taking the BB away from her, I don't see any possible way that you'll be able to keep her from using her phone while she drives, aside from taking over her body... I don't think that's an option...

Does Tmo offer online account access? I can log into my AT&T account and see the date, time, and length of all calls made as well as the date and time of all texts sent or received. The info is updated almost instantly. If you know when she is driving, you can see if she was on the phone or texting at that time. The first time you catch her, take the phone away for a day. The next time a week, etc. Let her know you are watching what she is doing and your not going to put up with it.

AT&T also has a service where you can place restrictions on the phones. Like when they can text, make calls, who they can call, etc. If Tmo offers something similar, instead of taking the phone away, you could restrict it to only being able to call or receive calls from you for a day or a week. Then you could still get in touch with her.

I had a problem with my son texting at school. I restricted his phone from texting during school hours and the problem was gone.
