Only legacy devices (pre-BB10) require a proprietary data plan from Blackberry. The passport is a BB10 device. All phones require one data plan now, so yes he can use the same plan and data on any unlocked phone.

BlackBerry 10 devices are fully compatible with regular plans.
BlackBerry specific plans are actually for pre-BlackBerry 10 devices.

She mentioned Vodafone, so it is a foreign carrier.

Prior to BB10, Blackberrys only ran on blackberry Internet service unless they had WiFi. Some had a wap browser and could access the wap network but there would be no full browsing the internet without BIS. This was done in every country.

Why would they want a passport in 2017. I still use mine as I can't afford to swap yet. It's great for messaging and Internet, but use my work phone as much for the apps which I need.

Passport is still a great device if you don't need a lot of apps and can get by with mobile websites. it's unbeatable for typing long messages and even documents. If you're not into paying for things with your phone or locking your door and turning the lights on and off with your phone, it's a perfectly functional device. Not everyone needs apps, some just want a great typing experience and a big screen to go with it.

I'm with you ALtoronto. as I say I still use mine, although I can't afford an upgrade yet, there is nothing out there that really excites me like the Z10 and passport did when they launched. I use browser for FB no probs, but linked in via the browser isn't as smooth as the app on my iPhone. Also I miss having news apps such as Independent and bloomberg etc. BBC website surfices.
It will be a sad day when I retire the PP I love it's size shape and keyboard, but each month it becomes more redundant.
Luckily whatsapp still functions but for how long....
