Motorola Xoom tablet to cost $800
- Is it really supposed to be around 500 with contract? I'm just wondering because all the other devices are the subsidized prices. Just makes me wonder why that one would be only device shown with an unsubbed price. Maybe they haven't worked that out. But even 500 or 600 w/ contract is a bit much. We sign contracts so we don't have to pay much for devices upfront. Might as well get the next gen iPad for the same price and be contract free.
yeah you would prefer QNX but most consumers don't even give a hoot about it. it has zero name recognition. what do they care about? apps. and ios and android have tons of great ones. and that's is something that QNX isn't going to have a lot of. QNX playbook is geared to die hard BB fan "people", like the ones that post here a lot.01-23-11 02:02 PMLike 0 -
The best use case I can see is going to T-Mobile, getting an Android 2.2 device, and paying $15/mo. to tether a Soft-Capped (Throttled), Overage-Free 3G/4G data plan to a WiFi only model.
I think Sprint has unlimited 4G and a Tethering plan, as well, so that would be a good deal provided these two carriers have decent coverage in your area.
But Verizon and AT&T. I'd hate to see my bill :P
It's like $40+ for a data plan on a Tablet device itself. The WiFi models are better, IMO - but of course many people will happily break hte bank because they get to save up front on teh subsidy (but will pay considerably more over the course of the contract).
I also prefer WiFi-only tablets because you do not have to depend on carriers for updates... They will come straight from the manufacturer...01-23-11 03:18 PMLike 0 - My plan is a WiFi based tablet paired with a phone with WiFi hotspot. I am not sure on iPad2, Android or PB yet. You can root your Android or jailbreak your iPhone and get free hotspot support quite easily however. I am curious to see how the PB and BB pairing works, if the data abilities are fully supported between the two, and how much carriers charge for the ability. Overall, the WiFi hotspot ability appeals to me more.
I certainly cannot see paying $800 for a tablet or buying a data plan just for the tablet. I saw that Best Buy will have the Xoom for $699, but that is still too expensive for me. Rooting a Nook Color for $250 is looking better and better!01-24-11 11:53 AMLike 0 - It looks like $800 might be the price tag. You can buy a laptop cheeper that that and do more with it.

I'm not saying I'd pay $800 for any tablet..but I certainly would sooner buy an $800 tablet than an $800 laptop. But that's just because it fits my personal needs (i mean..wants ) better.02-07-11 12:36 PMLike 0 - Agreed..but personally i'm done with laptops. I never need to use the CD drive. I don't use a personal one for work..so really for me a tablet is the perfect in between. It's clean, tidy, I don't need to carry around a laptop bag the size of little person..and most important to me I don't need to lug around the huge battery charger that is so commonplace for laptops nowadays and can just use this thing on my lap like it's meant to be.

why can't one of them make a beautiful direct 12V power charger for my Car, and I can use an adapter in hotels to convert the AC to DC as needed. Converters are half the size of the stupidity that laptop chargers are.02-07-11 02:00 PMLike 0 - Agreed..i'd sooner them put a little more technology into powering the laptop than the laptop themselves. And really..I don't know how good an $800 laptop is. Sure..it will do the trick of web surfing..CD/DVD, programs etc. But when they pre-load Windows 7 on the thing (which is a huge memory hog), these things seem to bog down and run like ****e imo (long boot up times, random crashes etc). After I dropped $400 on my wifes Netbook this Christmas..and seen how crappy that thing ran..I have no desire to pick up one again.02-07-11 04:01 PMLike 0

netbooks are evil! they run Windows 7 Starter which is stupid, and they are just too small to use as a laptop02-07-11 06:47 PMLike 0 - They're not meant for anything heavy. I loved mine for mindless Facebook time wasting (Farmville, etc) and browsing. Some sites (other than porn sites!) do require Flash.
It's the main reason I didn't get the iPad (lack of Flash) aside from the size. I loved my little netbook.

- I hate to be the bearer of bad news, I really do, but I don't think that anything is going to supplant the iPad. That isn't a very realistic goal.02-16-11 01:02 PMLike 0
