On my 8820, can I get mobile apps, such as the GoogleTalk clients, to run on WiFi? Or am I limited to using these apps on edge only?
I have installed bbmaps, google maps, opera mini, gCalSync, and gmail app on my 8820. None of them have been able to access the network using wifi.
I the gCalSync error message was: "java.io.IOException: invalid tunnel name"
I have tried this with TLS default set to 'proxy' and allow HTTPS redirections set to 'yes'. I also tried changing the TLS default to 'handheld'. I have my APN information blank because I only want to use wifi.
I don't know how to fix this problem and have searched and found no solution. THis is my first appeal for help.
Only the most recent applications made by RIM can use wi-fi. This includes Blackberry Browser and the Facebook application. Any third party applications (ie. Google Maps, Jivetalk, Opera Mini) are only able to connect using cellular data. All of these applications were created before the wi-fi blackberries came out. All previous blackberries only used cellular data and as such these apps were coded to use cellular data.
Googletalk uses cellular data.
I dont think so. On my BB I turned of mobile network, and connected it via wifi and gtalk was working fine.... :D
I try to send msngs to one of my friend who was online and it worked fine....
Seems to be a lot of mis-information on this subject. I turned off my network data and just left on WiFi. I started trying all my different apps. I was surprised how many DID work! Ones that absolutely did not work on WiFi... JiveTalk, Windows Live Search, Infospace FindIt, iSkoot, Avantgo.
Apps that DID work on WiFi.... Maufait, Beyond411, Goggle Maps, Opera mini beta 3, BeamBerry, BBWeather and of course... all the BB OS apps.
On Opera, I did have to set the TCP settings to Socket vs http. This leads me to believe some of the apps that didn't work MIGHT be able to be tweaked and made to work. YMMV
Did you ever figure out what apps worked after tweaks?
Yes, a lot of people who don't understand this topic will tell you the wrong thing.
Basically, an application in general does not care or understand how it is connected to the Internet, only that it is or isn't.
If you have a data plan and Wi-Fi, you have two connections to the Internet when Wi-Fi is available.
Newer applications (and phones) will prefer the Wi-Fi as it is faster, but basically any Internet application will work over Wi-Fi, TCP, or your phones data network such as EDGE.
The trick is that some applications can be configured in their options to only use one or the other. This allows you to say require Wi-Fi to avoid data charges on a by-the-MB data plan.
Some applications will default to the data network over Wi-Fi even if Wi-Fi is available. To get them to use Wi-Fi, you'd have to turn off your data connection temporarily.
Remember, you have to have your own Wi-Fi hotspot (your own home router), as you can only login to pay-Wi-Fi sites if you have your carriers Wi-Fi plan.

I've read blogs and there are some people that say that facebook works on their blackberry over wifi...how do you do that it doesn't work for me?
I have found a solution to this problem. Purchase a data plan from your service provider for let's say a month. Download all the apps that require reaching the server, during this month. Use the apps at least once during this month also. When your plan expires the apps will continue to work through your wi fi connection. I have done this with the 8320 curve and I'm unsure about it on other bb devices.
I really wish i could get facebook on my 8900 to work over wifi, i have prepaid so I can't sign up for data plans.
there is a very good solution:
if you can get one of those "data day passes" for your BB, get it and have the data. then, download and install all the google apps (via whatever network you want including wifi) and they will now work even after your data services stop because the service books and host routing table entries have been entered forever. worked for me! the apps will continue to function on wifi as a mean to save data (which they were originally intended to do)
cheers!
