I sent a friend a picture days ago. I just got a message from their name saying "message expired". What does this mean?

The message went out but somewhere along the line it wound up sitting on the
server and not delivered to the recipient.

After an amount of time the server stops trying to send the message and
kicks that report back to you.

You could try sending it again. If the problem persist definitely give VZW a call.

you can specifiy the amount of retries the network attempts to resend a message that originally failed to send. due to some network trouble at the time, your message never sent and all retries failed.
