    This may be answered somewhere but MAGNET was too broad a search.

    I just got a Kindle PaperWhite. The official amazon case for it switches it on/off using a magnet much like bbphones can be turned on/off using cases with magnets in them.

    So I was wondering if this is a Rim "exclusive" or has been around for a while?

    That technology has been around for a while let me see if I can find the patent number.

    I thought I had the exact number because I discussed his before. From what I remember Nokia patented it in 1990, some case that uses the Hall effect.

    Apple recently patented the iPads magnetic cover, this patent only pertains to the way the iPads covert clips to the iPad magnetically and not how the sleep or wake option is activated. I'll find it for you when I get a chance.

    Interesting. I was hoping Rim could leverage the technique and get a kindle app for the bb10!

    The problem is, I think this is too broad a thing to be patented and everyone uses it so no patents there
