Lessons for RIM as webOS continues to flounder
- Reviews on the HP Veer are out, and as has always been the case, the performance is awful.
Veer 4G review | This is my next...
In the past many blamed the Pre hardware for this, but the Veer ships with decent specs. What it comes down to still, is webOS's use of web technologies for its SDK and runtime. Like RIM, Palm wanted to get many developers on board quickly, as well as develop the minimal SDK they could afford. They based their application runtime on webKit and said apps would just run as web pages.
Maybe QNX is amazing, and the Torch team is on the ball, but the continuing challenges for webOS after a big overhaul and new fast hardware, show that betting on web technologies, like RIM is doing with WebWorks, is in the end a costly and complicated, and very risky strategy.
